International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

we ll get a Golden cuckoo and a Birchen marans as a result .

that what I m asking RedBank to do because she like s the Birchen but she doesn t have them but she has a BCM and a Silver cuckoo marans.

chooks man

I like birchen too.

can you please explain me what exactly I would get and how to work with them. do they breed true and if so when (after how many generations)?

yeah they will breed true but will take some time 5 years minimum if you start with a Silver cuckoo rooster in the first crossing .
and will take more time if a black copper was a rooster in the first crossing .

I m working on the same cross my self . year 3 so far .

the original birchen was created by crossing the silver cuckoo x a black copper hens long time ago.

let me know if you are interested I ll explain it with extra detail .year by year .

I am very interested.

I have a silver cuckoo cockerel and no hens. the chick that hatched from monique's eggs seems to be bcm pullet. if she lives she will go to my bcm boys. luna will be crossed with bcm first and when another one comes to age for breeding I plan to move luna to the silver cuckoo.

I hear what you're saying, and I totally respect that.  I certainly haven't been around long enough to merit a worthwhile opinion on it!

I do have a lot of experience with horses, though, and it doesn't bother me, personally, to bring outside blood into most breeds. I know some people and some registries have a very purist viewpoint, and I can see that, too. My current riding horse is an Oldenburg with a somewhat unusual pinto color. I believe the pinto gene was brought in by a Thoroughbred several generations ago.  I guess I feel that as long as it meets the standards and breeds true...if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then...?  After all, weren't Marans heavily influenced by Croad Langshans?

Like I said, I'll defer to your expertise!  Maybe my chickens need a new name!

Since it might be the lavender gene of an Orp over the copper of a BCM, maybe Lavender Marington? Or use the the German term for the straw dilute and call them Isabel Orpans, lol?  I should start a movement!  :D

Isabel Orphans!! You're a hoot!

How is the egg color on your Lavenders? If they lay at least a 4 wouldnt that be enough for them to be considered Marans?

The birchens are beautiful chickens. If only my husband would build me a few more coops. ;)

that is a great plan .
let them some growing and when the time come I ll help you making the cross .
I ll Mp you the detail of the crossing so you can print it out and safe it .

you know with a pair like yours where the rooster is a silver cuckoo and a pure one and a BCM hen you will recreate =
1) Birchen marans
2) Silver cuckoo marans
3) golden cuckoo marans
4) Black copper marans..

so a lot of work and a few extra pens are needed to do the 5 years minimum .

here Lav are still younger . so there is no eggs yet.

doesn t mater if they lay dark egg ,they will never be marans .Because like I said before the marans genome doesn t have a Lav gene .( I m talking about the original French maransans a French standard they are never to be accepted .

you guys are in the USA different standard and doesn t mater to me ,some as the Australian standard ans the English standard .they are all copies .

WELSUMMER CHOOKS LAY DARK EGGS DOESN T MAKE THEM MARANS.

he is sublime . great type . all strength and vigor .
body wise I can not spot a fault all greatness .

he is not just over colored .he carry different gene ,will be an asset to recreate a Blue buff tail marans by crossing him to a wheaten hen with a lot flame on her hackle and uniform clay dody color .

you hatch him from your flock or shipped eggs?
I m very interested about him .

very fine specimen . forget about the body color .he has a truck load of quality . he is not a show bird for sure but he is a first class breeder.

chooks man.

PS = are you really a moonshiner , running around a forest to do your crafty business . ha ha ha ....................

Ah I m all over it like the rush . here my new home made set up . new incubation room inside the house in of the spare room I have . nice and cool East facing so it is cooler room they are marked as A ,B ,C etc........... they have a count down too . a good thing that a lot people did not want to cancel the order they placed . they prefer to wait another year because there is no one selling the marans varieties I m offering ( if I can hatch them first ) I was going to give back they deposit but they would it accept it . Guess I have to keep it than . few where not happy ,but that life you can t please every body . the hatcher are in the Landry easier in case for handling a chicks when they come out of the hatcher ( if they are going to hatch) . I have to stop the habit of counting my eggs before they hatch . about the Cream LegBar I don t know much about them .they are my friend chooks ,he want me to breed them and we go 50/50 in the surviving chicks . I need to look at them . I actually like them heavy forager . and nice large Blue eggs . chooks man
