International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Do all black copper marans have that coppery colour in their hackles? I had a rooster but he didn't have Any copper?

A true black copper cockerel/cock will have copper in his hackle, back, shoulders, and saddle. If your rooster was solid black he was either badly overmelanized or a Black Marans, which is a different color strain of Marans.

Also, make sure your coops are well ventilated (small windows or vents near the top of the coop) so moisture can escape and fresh air can enter the coop.
lol oh man i dont think im far enough into farm life to go chopping off combs. I'd be traumatized LOL. I had windows open and that happened. So, I shut them up. Now they hhave only the automatic door which is small but still gives ventilation.

Lol I agree it isnt for someone with a weak stomach. Im a nurse so blood doesnt bother me. The chickens end up being the better for it and they barely flinch. It keeps our boys healthy. :)

We dont normally get severely cold temps in KY like some of yall but frost bite on combs seems to be inevitable every year. It definitely would be wise to batten down the hatches when temps get real low. Yall are better than me, Im not a fan of the cold. I would be moving south if it was already in the negatives here.

Would this handsome young gentleman be a good male for breeding? I'm considering purchasing him from someone local. I'm in NW Arkansas. Thanks for your input. I just don't know what specifics to look for

Hello everyone!

I have been MIA for a while. I apologize for being so inactive. My birds are well.
The chicks have grown so fast and I need to post pictures of a few... particularly my favorite cockerel.

They are little troopers. They live outside with their foster mom and they run about in the daytime even if it is below freezing temps.
I have to make them go inside at dusk and they all give me a ear full every time haha. I am impressed by them on a daily basis. They remind me of wild chickens in the way they act sometimes, fun to see them feel so comfortable no matter the conditions.

Now for the reason I was so inactive...

As many of you know my grandmother died in November, my family all agreed that we all felt a little incomplete since we no longer had anyone living next door.
We decided that we wanted to offer my grandmother's home to her brother, he accepted and we have all felt so much joy by having him here.
He has already started to tell us stories about his life and we all have enjoyed learning more about him.

post the pics as soon as possible!

it is nice to hear you have a new cousin and neighbor. I think something like that would never happen in europe, at least not in south europe. people here would kill each other and grab a house, does not matter they don't really need it. I did enjoy reading your post.

I think you should go for it! If I had the opportunity to obtain some nice birchens I would.

He has good type, good color. He has adequate leg feathering and his leg color is appropriate. Tail angle is good. Lucky you! Im jealous of everyones birchens! ;)
