International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

For those who like pictures, here's my project group. :D #1 #2 - Sadly, one of the points got pecked off by another chicken. The girls: And a pic with my 4mo mule colt who was a surprise 2-for-1 deal when I bought his mama, lol.
Winterhorses, Nice looking group of birds! Your pullets are of good type - send some egg pics when they come into lay. Keith

So I've got 12+ eggs coming to me from the lady I bought Lady Oliva from as a chick. I really didn't want to travel 8 hours round trip for eggs [she isn't hatching right now]. So hopefully they'll be here by Friday or Saturday. I'll send some pics of the eggs as I set them.

Here are a couple of the Bielefelder/Marans cross pullets. They are very beautiful and unlike my Cuckoo Marans these girls have nicely feathered feet. They are from BCM and BBS hens.

My Chicken Ridge Farm group is developing so fast! Not even 4 months yet, and they're already crowing up a storm. Makes for quite the symphony in the morning with my other boys.

I need to start paring down my group before my neighbors start sending hate mail, lol. Any advice on which of these I should keep would be greatly appreciated!

#1 Blade Runner - This guy's comb started out flopping to the side but has since made a serious attempt to stand up. He's the tallest of the 3 and also the most dominant.

#2 Shy Guy - He really lives up to his name, and the only halfway decent shot I got of him today is the one above, with Blade. He's the smallest.

Here are 2 from Dec. 13:

#3 Copper - No feathering on legs, but my Bev Davis girls (Pinky Pie's sibs) have A LOT of feathering. Nicest comb. Almost as tall as Blade and just as robust.

Copper and Blade: (I just noticed some of the copper on their chests almost look like laced feathers. Might this molt out?)

Copper and Blade with Shy Guy in the back. Plus one of my Lav/Isabel/Marington/whatever cockerels in the mix.

Too many boys!!

Where is Pinky? Is this a different group for a different line? Sorry I have been gone for awhile. Feathers on legs are easy to fix. Look at my two cross hens - I just posted a pic of them. Feathered legs in first generation. LOL These cockerels are at an awkward stage. Will one of these be a back up for Pinky?

thanks for posting your pics redbanks, i have a question about the chest of a maran and I hope you don't mind me using this opportunity to ask. 2 of my roos seem to look more like copper ...where as blade and shy guy have more of an obvious angle and look more like one of the other roos that I have. I have noticed this difference in my own flock. However, I'm not sure which is preferred. Its something I have been wondering about for awhile but i didn't have any good pics to differentiate between the types of "chest" presentation that I see in my coop and I don't know if I could ever manage all 3 of them in one shot, that in and of itself is lucky.

I have done a lot research about your Lav Marans Cross . if they are using a BCM over they Lav Marans? = they should get Black copper as a split not a Birchen with a pure Silver . I can not find how they did manage to get a pure birchen pullet (10/10) out off the Black copper cross . there is some thing they are not telling us . I ll love to know how they come out of the Birchen pullets .I can t take my eyes of her . stunning specimen .and a 100% pure marans . Can you ask them for me please I ll love to know . take it note as we breed is very important . like this case it is nice if we know how that pullet come to been . who is her parent stock ? so we can make more of her . chooks man

I like to think of the chest as a boat bow, like Blade. That is what I want to see. Illustration and quote from French Marans Club page on Ideal Silhouette.

a broad, rather prominent chest, neither flat nor shallow

I like Blade the best out of these three because he is more balanced, for me put together better. They change so much but for me when I see balance young they don't fall apart as badly. Sometimes it happens. My Claude was really something when he was young but I do not like him as much now. Maybe he is nice but just doesn't compare to Antonio. I need to post pictures and get some opinions from my colleagues. Sometimes I get coop blind.... I stop really seeing them.
