International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Cream legbars can be friendly, but mine follow me wherever I go, whereas the Marans always keep a respectable distance while not getting out of treat range. My legbars like to peck at my shoes, and I've had some fly up on my shoulder. They are similar to leghorns, their main progenitor, in many ways, but seem more tameable. They fly all over the place, but they are not particularly cold hardy and I tend to have problems with frostbite especially on the cocks. They have very loud eggsong. They slow down laying during cold weather, whereas Marans don't seem near as affected by weather, just lights and molting. I love their friendly, inquisitive ways, but the cocks can get mean if not handled right.

I'm glad you pointed out the thin versus boxy tails on the Marans hens.i ran out to look over all my ladies.

I find that my Marans are super friendly and curious chickens, especially the roosters. They surround me and peck at my boots when I enter their run. They're not afraid of us at all as long as I'm not trying to catch them. lol

My Leghorns are not the typical "flighty and skittish" birds the breed is commonly described as being. They greet me at the door and follow me around closely, always underfoot. I have to be mindful of them to keep from stepping on them.

My Legbars are still babies, but I'm hoping they have a calm nature when they mature.

Some informal pictures of my 11 week old group.
A few of the girls have good color on their hackles, I will be taking some proper photos of the best looking ones quite soon.

In about a week I will be letting them out to forage. They were just moved into a new coop so they need some time to recognize this coop as "home" before I start letting them loose.

they are very nice .great type and color too .

some colorful cockerels in there .

It's hard . I have a really sweet rooster right now. Even the girls from his hatch group love him. I try to put them in the coop but they keep finding a way to be with their favorite guy. It's to the point where they are standing in the rain, in the dark, trying to get into where he is in the garage. Mr. Lee was working on his truck, so I go to hang out by the wood stove and offer my conversation. I ended up picking him up, chicken in the lap by a fire seems so natural. Anyways I am looking into his eyes and he seems so sweet, I wish I could do better by him. Something about him, he just seems like a cool dude, we are kindred spirits. I already have my 2 roosters. I do not need a third. But right then and there by the fire I decided I was going to 'do right' by him. Ever since he's been living the good life. He's got some girls in there right now he's hanging out with. Pure Oregano from youngliving ($$) in his water, some chick peas and leek onion mix for treats. Sometimes some birds just connect with you and others don't. Either way it's always hard to get rid of them. If you don't get rid of them though, that... can be even worse. Like me, putting all this energy into a rooster i dont need, for a reason I can't explain, with no logical plan of action for his near future.

Updated pics of my Marans! I know slim to none about the breed but love these guys! The hen laid her first egg today

NOT all the chooks in ours backyard are to breed .some are just a friend like your rooster . Cosmic traveler they come to visit us and if they lie they stay with as .

I m trying to breed from the ones they lie me and they are happy to see me .
the skitish one soon I ll breed them out or I ll sale them after I hatch some chicks from them .

WE are not mad scientist thrying to breed animal just to breed them .

We are farmer or chooks lover .we want to breed ours chooks to make them batter and healthier .

I always keep the ones I like even if I don t breed them .

When I bought my BCM rooster Zambezi 2 month ago he was so scared of me .I couldn t even take a good photos of him .
NOW he is my favorite with White storm and the other .
Zambezi he is the first one to great me and he calls out all his ladies to come as well to get the treat from me .
Now went I have a spare time before the sun set after I gave them they mix seed treat . I sit by the Zambezi pen. what a lovely spirit inside that creature. I m so please to have him better than all the 8 I got ready of them .
So now he is no going any where of limit .

plus he turn up to be so fertile like the river he s named after .BONUS. plus he is a handsome too .
