International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

So it looks like I'm going to have to get rid of my Blue Copper cockerel. As I was opening the door to their pen he came right up behind me and pecked me pretty hard. It left this mark through my jeans. Later today he also went after my two year old. I was already on alert knowing what he did to me today and so the second I saw him charging from 10 ft away from my son a yelled and raced toward him. I'm glad I caught him on time. I can't have bad bahaving cockerels. It's and shame because he's been so lovely. And my only other Marans Cockerel :[
my french guy attacked me yesterday. I picked him up, gave him a big hug, talked to him for a while and we are friends again. that is what I do with roos and all of them are tame.

my little chick has leg problem and twisted toes. I am not sure if she was hatched like that or it is an injury. I had to take her out of the bator as she got stuck in the hole on the floor.

she is running away from the lamp. besides the feed I chopped her some dandelion and gave her some sesame seeds. she was pecking dandelion and when she discovered sesame seeds she said: rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and gobbled them. when I checked her at 5 am she was sleeping on the floor and no trace of feed, lol. I put some more.

Me and Jake have an understanding. He is the longest lived rooster because he respects my space and I generally respects his, unless I need to pick him up for some reason. The only time he's ever given a human the stink eye was when my oldest daughter (8) was trying to catch some of his ladies and they were screaming bloody murder about it; even then he never attacked. Since I have a toddler around, I won't tolerate a rooster I cannot trust. I don't want to worry about either the kids or the other birds. My son and the Tom turkey have a bit of a row as it is!

Cute chick, congrats! How many girls are in Mud's pen? I've read that 6 hens per Rooster is maximum for Marans. Maybe Chooks Man will weigh in on ratio.

I just set up my breeding pens this weekend. My cockerels are still clumsy teenagers so I'll give them 10 days to two weeks to smooth the sheets out before I start collecting eggs. Overall, the breeding pens are calm so that's good.

Mud had 8 girls and Cooper has 6. Cooper keeps up with his girls well and keeps their eggs fertile. I figured Mud was just young and still adjusting to being head rooster. He is learning fast and now tidbits to call his girls to treats. I will candle the next couple of clutches in the incubator and see if they are developing. If fertility continues to be an issue I wi take out my sussex layers from his pen and move them so he can focus on the Marans. I didnt know Marans needed a smaller ratio! Thanks for the heads up. :)

Last year I had 1 BCM roo in with my 11 BCM hens plus 5 others for a total of 14 hens and had about 95% fertility

Thank you Double Barrel! And I miscounted, Mud has 9 girls in his pen: 1 BCM, 3 Splash Copper Marans, 4 Speckled Sussex, and 1 Easter Egger. I forgot about the Easter Egger because she is such a freeloading slacker as a layer. She is 10 months old and has yet to lay her first egg.

Finally I had a blue copper chick to hatch. Only one hatched out of the clutch, but I will take what I can get. The rest of the eggs from Mud's pen were infertile in that clutch. I'm hoping this means he is starting to get the hang of things.
