International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thank you kfelton002, it is very nice to meet you! Sounds like you are working with some very nice birds! How delightful to meet a fellow Kentuckian right from the start!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread. I have been gone from backyard chickens for several years! I recently purchased some BCM from LP. I am super excited, but can't count my chickens before they hatch.

This is the first full day for my seven LP eggs in the incubator . I just love BCM, they have to be one of the most beautiful breeds of chickens in the entire world. It is very gracious of the veteran marans breeders to share their wealth of knowledge with others. I have not been able to read the complete thread, but wow, a wealth of information. I would love to share pics of my LP chicks with you all if they hatch. I know that incubating shipped hatching eggs is risky business. Anyway, it's been a pleasure reading this thread. Best of luck to everyone, and their beautiful birds. I really enjoy all the pics.

So glad you are here, we have a great group and all share your love for BCM. Good luck with the hatch. LP are beautiful birds. I loved the "can't count my chickens before they hatch". Yesterday I was going to the Farmers Market with 15 dozen eggs in 4 baskets and I thought "don't put all your eggs in one basket".

Welcome to the thread .

don t be shy to ask questions .

LP line is a pure line from Monique in France gifted them to Branda LP.

Monique Marans are the purest you can find in this planet .30 years of selective breeding .

Branda LP is doing a great job of keeping them pure no adding any thing to them .

Chooks man

It's nice to meet you too!

I love my Marans, but like most lines of BCM they aren't perfect and have their flaws that must be worked on. I am looking forward to growing out my first generation of home bred and raised Marans this year. They are a pleasure to work with, a very gentle breed.

Did you take a pic of your LP eggs before you set them?

Thank you RedBanks! Very happy to be here, and very nice to meet you!!! I am super excited about my BCM chicks, hoping I at least get one

!! I have heard BCM are harder to hatch out in an incubator than other breeds, so I guess I will see. I don't know anyone near me that raises BCM, so I took the plunge with LP. Fingers crossed.

kfelton0002, how exciting to be starting your first generation!! I hope they do well for you!! I didn't get a picture before I set them, but I did take a picture after I set them. I can be so dumb sometimes.

It is harder to tell their true color now that they are in the incubator. Lesson learned. I named them all

Don't let me down little fellas!!!!!

Magpie, Nut, and Styx were the three eggs that looked to be mostly the same color. The other four vary in appearance. Just thought if at all possible;IF they make, I can be able to look back at what color egg they hatched out of!

How sweet that you already have them named! I hope every single one hatches for you. They have very nice color! Just make sure you are turning them at least 3 times a day. You can set shipped eggs upright no problem, especially if they have detached or loose aircells. Just gently rock them a few times a day to turn.

And I see you have a Hovabator Genesis.. good choice! Great minds think alike.. I'm a GQF girl also. I have a digital sportsman and a Genesis I use as a hatcher.

The girls have FINALLY picked up laying! It's beginning to look a lot like spring time!! This is not counting the eggs that got marked for the incubator! I am cleaning out my LA pullets so the Marans eggs will add a lovely touch of color to the egg cartons for my egg customers!

They were freshly collected so they are unwashed and a little dirty.
