International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I'm seeing very good type and color thru out the different varieties of your young chooks - very impressive. It's going to be fun to watch Hercules Jr. as he grows up. Are you working on a Blue Cuckoo variety? I thought I may have spotted a couple of Blue Cuckoos in your pics but my eyes could be playing tricks on me.

Well done my friend!

Keith

Yeah you are alright ,I m working on the Blue cuckoo Marans ,Silver and golden .I m trying to get a pure white strain from this cross later it is a long project 5 or 6 years .

Now that I have the F1 Blue Golden/silver cuckoo male and female I need to mate them next breeding season when they are adult and get the F2 progeny .in this population I ll have some Splash silver cuckoo male and female . those one I m after .I ll use them over a Dominant white x to the recessive strain I m working on separately and that will give me a purest white marans never existed before ,
here the genome I m trying to put together . pure white strain ,never fade ,never goes yellow .always have a clear beak and pink shank never dark ,because of the cuckoo gene..
ER/ER . S/S . B/B . BI/BI, I/I , c/c . Pti1/Pti1 etc.............................

I kinda think so also! It was one of the biggest hatcheries and it was straight run laying hen assortment. I thought well if I order 50 then I should get 20-25 laying hens. We would keep a couple roosters and could eat the rest. We ended up with 3 hens and a stringy chicken dinner x 45!!!!!

Ah hatchery peoples .
that is kind nasty doing.
they ll get they karma .

They where layer breeds and they where not so good to eat. I think they where kind of stringy no matter how we tried to cook them. It was before I got into BCM and Ameraucanas.

sorry I thought they where marans . at lease you end up with a good chooks to eat .but it is not the case .layer stringy breed .

I feel your pain .

Yeah dry incubation work great as well depend on the climate you live in . not too dry ,neither too wet .

marans eggs because of they thickness need a little higher temperature 37.7/8 DC and lower humidity 40/50 % . because they are thick and large .

in the end of the day each climate is different .so it is our job to find the right setting .

Thanks Chooks man, I am going to try again only this time with less expensive eggs and see what happens.

I'm really glad I subscribed to this thread. Learned two important bits of info from you. One, settings for hatching Marans eggs which are different than other birds. And two, that Marans taste good. That's two very important things to know. Thanks much for pointing those things out. I've been searching for some of the better tasting chickens for a while and I never thought about Marans being better.

2011 marans chooks .white variety from the breeding syndicat took the first place on the competition of the best testing chooks .ahead of the Bresse chooks and la Fleche.

pouler fermier haute game Red label . top nosh farmed chooks Red label .

I do no eat other chooks .they are inferior to the marans .

Question. Would this process help any bird, before processing, taste better? Or has anyone tried this on birds other than Marans?

this method has been used in France for a long time .to rise a slow growing chooks breed for they meat .manly la Bresse Breed from la bresse region .

now is bunch mark used by the chooks meat grading as the Red Label .highest mark and price .

the chooks has to be raised free ranging from week 6 tell they are 5 month .10 meter square for each chooks .fed home made grain mix .
at 5 month they lock them in cages to minimize they move so they relax ,and feed them corm mush with power milk ones a day for 4 weeks .then they are processed .

this way the chooks are guaranteed a good life and well prepared for they final destination .

they sale for a lot money .

me I do not lock them in cages .I do lock them in smaller pens indoors . group of 10 chooks in each pen. work well

No grass in this period or other feed . only corn much and milk.

this method will work on all the slow growing meat breed too .
