the last chick couldn't hatch without help. the little raven is drying under the broody. I hope it will be ok till the morning.

I bet she is a girl. and I hope so.

there is 1 more egg with no sign of life. I left it under the other broody just in case.

Ok guys and gals, I got a great deal on a small Brower brooder. 25 chickens.... Last batch of chics I did day old in plastic bin and heat lamp. I did not like that too much!! slick bottom and wood chips with a hanging heat lamp!!! So this new to me Brower brooder is all galvanized metal with a temp control heat tube. Works great. It has rubber cover wire floor. Can I keep my day old chics on this?? Do I want a solid floor with wood chips, a nice puppy mat or What?? TOM

Ah good question .
my white line come from a inbred line of Black tail buff /wheaten . they luck mass and they eggs are not dark 4 .so they are not good to me to keep them pure .they need to be fixed and bred well if I want them to leave longer and prosper .So I m working on them

here my plan .now that I lost both white hens and left with only White Storm the rooster ,so I crossed him to all my dark egg laying hens and a silver based  hens too ( Birchen ).
He was crossed to
2 Birchen hens = F1 progeny ,all the pullets are Black copper looking split white .and the cockerel are half way Birchen/BC carrying a white gene and some yellow impure Colombian
!1 Black copper /Wheaten F1 cross = F1 progeny ; Black copper pullets ,Buff pullets .cockerels are Wheaten .impure BC and pure Black tail buff.
1 Blue copper /Wheaten cross  = F1 progeny ; black copper /blue copper. blue Tail buff. Cockerel ; Blue Tail buff . Blue copper and Black copper

Now I ll mate all the F1 pullets to the F1 cockerels .each progeny will be bred separately and they will yield around 25% pure Recessive white .and they should have ( they already have ) good body type .body mass and darker egg .

my future white cockerels will come out of the Birchen crossing .silver based not golden based .

I have made a lot F1 over 50 pullets to chose from and a lot cockerels

This breeding season I ll mate White Storm to my F2 Silver cuckoo hens .to get more split white silver based . different line .

a lot plans and a lot work but in few year time I ll have a best white marans with a proper white genome ER/ER . S/S ( S/-) B/B ( B/-)  c/c. I/I .Pti1/Pti1. .never goes yellow and never fade always pure White with Pink shank and beak .

Wow, now that's a plan! I wish you well my friend. I was thinking maybe you were going for a Columbian variety. I still have so much to learn and I appreciate you for the teaching moment.

I'm working on my BCM and BLCM for the next 2-3 years then I plan to start working on a Blue Cuckoo Line.

Take Care,
Keith

congrats for the brooder.

they need to be dry and warm so pine shaving or anything warm that absorbs their poops would be good. a friend of mine has a cage with wire floor and he puts newspaper when the chicks are young but his chickens usually end up on antibiotics. I wouldn't take chances.

yeah you are alright .I wanted the Colombian from White Storm and a pure white too .now I got the impure Colombian and a Split white as first generation ( Cockerels )

for me now to breed the pure white from this split white F1 hybrid ,I need to mate them together as F1 X F1 to get a true F2 . in this generation 25% of them will be pure white .

For the Colombian ,I only needed the cockerels from this crossing .I know I ll no get the pullets .
pullets breeding is a different formula .

here how I m going to do it , now that I have 3 cockerels all impure Colombian . ER/EWh..S/s+, Db/db+
I m going to mate them to a F2 Silver Wheaten pullets to get a F3 pure Colombian EWh/EWh ,S/S ( S/-). DB/DB . cockerels and pullets.
from this F3 I ll select only the Colombian and breed them together forward to produce a F4 and F5 pure Colombian Marans Strain .

in the marans the Colombian is with less hackles marking .So it is based on the gene DB( Black tail ) Not the Co ( Colombian ) .
in French they call this variety HERMINEE' like the priest robe ( white with Black edging )
So the Maran Herminee ( Colombian ) should have a Black just on the bottom end of the hackle ( not all the way up the top like the sussex breed ) and black tail .

Breeding is fun and time consuming .
I do enjoy it .

breeding any variety from scratch is rewarding .
