International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have a bad news. Jupiter (the cockerel from the Monique"s egg) died. he was fine yesterday morning but in the evening within 20 minutes his both eyes got swollen. he looked as he was boiling inside. I found him dead this morning. the veterinarian said mycoplasma but I think it must have been something viral as it happened fast. the vet is not an avian specialist. he is the best vet on the island but famous for dogs and cats. he started to follow the chickens but he is a human being who needs years of experience.

I live in Oregon but I heard everyone ships these days? Even willing to buy an incubator if that's what it takes to make this happen.

I think it is better idea as it is easier to find the eggs.

I was in another thread where someone mentioned that he cannot ship the birds as they are not certified. I live on the other side of the planet so I cannot help you.

if you see that someone has good bcm and lives near you try to send pm.

Thanks for your replies.

I don't see why those two can't be compatible? Egg color is one (great, IMO) attribute to this breed. So I don't see why getting dark colored eggs and taking that into account for breeding (among other things) is a bad thing.

I don't want to show birds but I like having great looking birds. I want to improve the breed with the help of chooks and others.

Greenfire has chicks for $60. That's way more than what I'm willing to pay. I was hoping to get second hand green fire birds, or from someone with good lines that doesn't charge that much.

I don't mean any disrespect by my last comment.

Just asking what your goal. What you are looking for. I got Birds from a gal that has nice birds but egg color was lacking. I also got birds from someone. I was on a waiting list for 6 months. Had a good line with dark egg color. They still have flaws. Such as lack of Copper color and white tail feathers. I also know someone that spent $60 for chicks and ended up culling them all. They still have flaws that need to be worked on. So just don't get your hopes up to find perfect birds. There are some good breeders that work towards SOP. Yes you can get good birds but often you have to work for them and it takes time and heavy culling. Ok, now I probably have everyone up in arms but that is what I have seen from my short time with Marans and starting over like 4 times now. Welcome to BYC!

sorry to hear about Jupiter ,what a shame ,you must be not happy at all .
I had chooks died that way , it is mycoplasma for sure ,there is many strain of it out there ,some of them kill the chooks so quickly .no time to do any thing .
if you have a wild bird around ( witch you do ) you have to watch because the wild bird carries alll sort of thing .

it is always said to lose a chooks ,specially when they are that age .

chooks man

killing all flock because they have fault is a very bad practice . normally peoples without much knowledge or are in harry to get there quickly use this method .
good breeder can always start with what they have available and work with it to improve it .
breeding chooks is fun not a war zone .

peoples go even far when they can t breed chooks to a SOP so they change and bend the Standard to reach they goals .

lucky there is some great breeders out there ,other wise we end up having not chooks .

we have to understand some thing very important . this rare chooks was not created by nature or what ever .they are man /woman creation from wild chooks .

I didn't say I killed them. I said I culled them. I didn't kill any of them. I just found them new homes. If you are not willing to part with any of them. How will you improve the lines? I think this is like the fourth time I have started over. It seems like a lot more.
