International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thank you. Yes, I got her from a breeder in Massachusetts where I live and she got her breeders from Little Peddlar lines?? Not sure if that means anything to you. Cannot wait for her to start laying and see if the eggs are nice and dark.

Yes..... my favorite line here. I have Little Peddler and Greenfire Farms. She reminds me of my hen Gabby. As I said, she is a lovely pullet! You might want to get SERIOUS! Laughing.......

I Thank You in advance for your indulgence.
Do y'all mess with blues here, or is there another thread?

Here's another 11wk supposed BCM pullet.
Pretty nice feather color-no mossiness?
No points on comb?
Another cross?

Great! Thanks @Chooks man and @RedBanks, just wanted to be respectful,
some breed threads do not indulge non-SOP bird keepers.

So, what do you think of these 2 Blue boys at 11wks?
Is there supposed to be any copper anywhere but hackle and saddle?
Want to keep one as flock sire to produce Olive eggers over CCL and EE.
Favoring Zeus over Luke because his legs/feet are cleaner(don't care for feathered legs here<gasp!>) even tho Zeus has comb sprigs, is smaller, is low boy, and much calmer.

Hello, thank you Keith. I hope you are well. I really have missed my good friends here! How is Otis? Was that your Roosters name it has been awhile? I had a blue Marans hen that hatched 11 out of 11 and took excellent care of all of them. I have had two BCM and one Splash that were not very good at motherhood. I have the cockerel in the house. I had him outside all day today. My dog thinks the chick is his. My dog's name is Gus (Lonesome Dove) so I named the little cockerel Woodrow. It is amazing how gentle Gus is with that chick. He is so rough with me but with that chick he takes such care. The chick runs all around him so Gus gets down on the floor. It is such a sight to see. I have a lot of reading to do here.

RedBanks,

Otis is well except that he is beginning to molt so he's not looking as handsome as he did last fall. Otis is almost 18 months old so I'll soon know his true color after he comes out of molt.

Gus is a good name for your dog and Woodrow too! Lonesome Dove is one of my favorite movies - I've seen it many times.

Take Care,
Keith

Ty

KC his breast definitely isn't shallow. One of the main reasons I chose him so far is his full breast. Yes the toes are crooked. Just about all of 2 hatches were like that. I believe combination between bad incubating and onto a cold concrete floor at 3 weeks. Others that have bought eggs from me had no problems and my latest hatch with new Incubator seems to have no problems yet at 4 weeks. Hoping his tail changes a bit as he gets older. I'm going to keep 2 but am having hard time choosing a second.

Dvoice,

Sometimes it's hard to see the true traits in pictures which is why I ask the question. No one knows your birds better than you! I'm happy to hear the crooked toe is not genetic.

I understand the difficulty in selecting a Chooks. I have 8 BLCM Cockerels to choose from - it seems my favorites change day-by-day because they change so much as they grow out. You'll make the right choice. Trust your eyes.

Take Care,
Keith

Good morning everyone. I bought a young BCM cockerel yesterday. My attempts to get an LP cockerel have failed miserably, but I did find a nice lady who had a young Green Fire Farms roo she was interested in selling. I named him Zorro, and he is extremely well-behaved and enjoys human companionship. I will try to upload some body pictures later. It was very bright out this morning, and I am waiting for some shade to come over. I took a quick snap of his head. I was wondering if all of the Marans experts would not mind giving critique one the head, eyes, ear lobes, beak ect. I know that having five points is correct, but I wondering if the comb is to fat vertically, as well as to bulbous in the front. I also thought I remember someone commenting on how the comb is not supposed to touch in the back either, so I guess he will loose points there too. I would like to be taught what to look for in a good comb. Thank you all in advance for your comments. You will not hurt my feelings, judge away. I know he is going to have faults. He is 22 weeks old. I am extremely impressed with his kind nature.
