chooksman, I noticed on the Marans Club De France that the only photograph they have of true Colombians are in black and white. Are there even any original Colombians left in Europe or anywhere? It is so awesome that you have the ability to remake them and bring them back. You will have to show us a real color photograph of a true Colombian when you reach you goal! I've been trying to read all of the posts in this thread. It just takes awhile. Sorry you lost Hercules. Can't wait until you reach your goal. Happy for you that you are almost there. Thank you for sharing pictures of them.

read as much as you can .I shared with you guys all the information I have about the marans chooks breed .

the original colombian marans variety is gone long time ago .
it has been recreated by 2 big breeder in France in the last 10 years . Monique Berte ( marans aspiran. and Emile Guerinel ( Syndicat poules marans)

The Colombian marans variety is actually a Silver version of a Black Tail Buff marans. same family genetic and a same genome except for a Silver ( columbian) and Gold ( Black Tail Buff)

Go to marans aspiran and have a look at Monique Colombian variety .
or go the Syndicat poules marans and have a look .there is a video there too .

I ll share the photos and how to make them as well . I think they are sublime variety if bred well .

this breeding season i ll hatch a lot of them and the white variety as well .

kfelton0002, he has a very adorable pouty face. I wish I could keep my Zorro and Blue Boy together, but I really think they would fight to the death. They are always sizing each other up on the opposite side of the fence, picking up pieces of straw or grass and throwing it at each other. The one time they were actually together they drew blood immediately.

Our gamecocks are that way, they will fight to the death so we have to keep them separated. Usually the younger Marans cockerels and the Legbar keep away from the Gamecocks, as they know they are outmatched. So it worried me when the Legbar (named Fabio) had picked a fight with a gamecock tied out, because the cock bird was older than him and Fabio wasn't backing down as he normally does. I worry it may not have ended well had I not put Fabio up.

Some males of even heavy breeds are just more confrontational than others, especially when they are protecting their harem of ladies.

the marans eggs have 1 quality no other chooks egg posses .
marans eggs are resistance to the salmonella disease . because of the thickness of they shell .

this quality make the marans eggs superior than other .

dark colour of the egg is gorgeous but just cosmetic .

I want to add that marans eggs can stay longer outside fridge, again due to their thickness. they contain slightly more proteins (about 3%) than the other eggs too.

I am envious of Tobambezi and his lack of parasitic white. You can tell just by looking at him how he would feel in the hands, solid and sturdy. Looks like he has been in a scrap lately too with that roughed up comb. He must be top dog, by the way he carries himself. I could use a cockerel like him around to help correct the parasitic white in my LA line. I bet he hatched from a nice dark egg also.

still too early to say .7 more month to go . i need to wait tell he goes through his adult molt .
this line is bred for type .mass and large oval eggs not as dark 5 and 6 at they best .
I bred his mama ( Tabarinne -Toby) ,his grand mama ( Sumaya) both black hens without any parasitic white .
The egg color is not every thing . it is the best thing to have but we need a correct type marans too .
to get ready of the parasitic white in your LA line ,you need to breed a sub LA line ( LA line X some thing else- without ant parasitic white-) and correct the problem there first . you ll have more new blood to help you get the job done .
when this new hybrid line is fixed ,introduce it to your LA line .
this way you can keep your LA line pure tell you fix the problem

my cockerels always fight .because they are penned in groups .
every one want to be top dog .
older they become ,calmer they will be .
the mature rooster don t fight ,they know each other very well ,so they stay from each other way . Not the cockerels ,they learn a hard way .
8 to 10 cockerels in each pen .at least one mature rooster with them .

Yeah this where I think the FRF line of birds will come in handy. So far their underfluff has been dark, no white. After his molt, Mud had no white. And Gretta is still getting her feathers back but so far so good. I looked her over the other night when I penned her up.

The FRF x LA birds all have dark underfluff but they are all still under a year old.

that is a great news .Mud has no parasitic white. he is the key to your problem them .
keep him safe and a live tel the old age to see how pure his black plumage is .

mate his daughters back to him to reinforce this trait and make it breed true .

you ll have a better chance with a Rooster . can sire many chicks in one season .
