International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I read something very similar to how you just described Norway in the American SOP. It says the Marans hen should have the character of a rustic farm hen, giving an impression of solidarity and strength without being too course. Norway is pure gold if she throws big meaty offspring. The birds we butchered over the summer all had puny breasts. I definitely plan to work on that.

it is very important trait when we work with a marans .
body type /mass and body carriage will score around 70 point between them at the show more than any point .
Plus the most important thing of them all. THE DARK EGG
for me those trait are first .
the rest .tuning the breed is later , comb ,eye, parasitic white ,tail angle etc...... .they only score you 5 to 10 point at they best or less . END those quality don t pay the feed and the rent . Mass and Dark egg do.

unfortunately I am not sure which one laid it. 2 ladies in black started to lay, no names yet. I am afraid that the pullet who laid this nice egg except that she is all black also has some sugar icing (whitish) on her ear lobes. my cockerels should fix the colour but we shall see what happens with the ear lobes.

the pullet how lays those eggs is a breeder in my book even if she has a green earlobe .
every thing could be fixed ,but the dark egg genes are very hard to come by .we can not aford to loose them from our flock genome . has to be bred true before any thing could be done to the chooks . other wise we lose the gene .
breed the dark egg layer line first .productive line
comb and body color another line .show line.

all of my marans are breeders. as I said before I need to create a starter flock before choosing breeders and culling.

the pullets with whitish earlobes already are F1. their mothers have white earlobes. there is a hope for them. btw, all 3 ladies in black look good (shape, mass, etc) except combs. but that is the last thing I will think about. first things first, right?!

Glad to hear someone else has the partial whitish earlobe problem. Will work on it myself!
