International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

all of my marans are breeders. as I said before I need to create a starter flock before choosing breeders and culling.

the pullets with whitish earlobes already are F1. their mothers have white earlobes. there is a hope for them. btw, all 3 ladies in black look good (shape, mass, etc) except combs. but that is the last thing I will think about. first things first, right?!
I just read about the flooding in Greece. Stay safe over there!

Glad to hear someone else has the partial whitish earlobe problem. Will work on it myself!

A few of my girls have partial white earlobes too. My LA line carries it. Ive only seen it so far in a few females, none in the males. I am using one or two of the pullets this year in my breeding pens. It can be corrected and improved like anything else with good breeding practices and culling. :)

It’s just strange that for 2 generations I didn’t have this white earlobe problem but then showed up on third

Recessive genes have to pair up on both sides (mother and father) for the offspring to show the trait. Only a percentage actually show the trait, another percentage are only carriers, and a percentage end up not being carriers. A bird can be carrying recessive genes and not show the trait.

Here are pics of Queen and #8's combs. I will get their weights after dark.

View attachment 1189018 One of my pullets has regularly been laying these eggs with the colour not evenly dispersed. The pointy end is still about a #5 but the rounded end is much darker

it is normal with a marans eggs to have not uniformity , one end darker than the other .

chooks man

PS .it is very nice
