International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hi there .
if this rooster is the sire of this cockerel than you have no worries about type. what you have to worry about is the Black shoulder , Absence of the Autossomal Red .he should have a rich red shoulder
gather than that he is stunning . I like a lot his hackle great copper and not too many flame ( almost nine)
and I like a lot the color of his shanks .
his eyes are sublime .

if his son hasn t got a red shoulder when adult, than you have to correct that by mating him to a hen with a coppery chest and less sheen .

chest color and the red shoulder both are controlled by the Autossomal Red Ar . not sex linked like the hackle and the lancets.

chooks man
Both so nice. Isn't it fun to see all these good Marans!

Do you know what they have?

there is no avian vet here. I think it must be some virus. I wonder if it can be heat stress, I don't know if that can cause some sneezing. my muscovie drake has a respiratory issue, breathes like a person with asthma. as ducks usually don't get sick I think maybe rats brought some virus again.

We have had our new thread for almost a month. I want to thank everyone for participating and lurking. This thread is about Marans and the people that love Marans. It is about helping each other with support, information and even chooks. Most of all we all owe Chooks Man a big thank you for sharing all of his knowledge and resources. He is a kind and generous man dedicated to Marans Chooks!

Top photo is Arizona Desert. I have an exact copy of that coop. Bottom coop is in the Florida winter. We are currently in very hot summer 95-100 F rain all the time. I have 4 pens. When they free ranged all day I kept more chickens. Now I have 10 - 12 each pen. Pens are 2- 8X8, 6X10 and 8X5.

Everything is very green, Lush! Lots to eat for the chooks.

beautiful birds! your chickens are lucky. I wish I had grass for mine.

what breed is the whitish chicken on the left side?

Quote: It is always scary isn't it? I hope they all get better soon. I don't take chickens to the vet though. I try to remember it is a chicken, I can buy a lot of chickens with the money I would pay a vet to save one.

yeah the heat stress cause the sneezing too.

on my first years 2014 when i bought my chooks every thing was alright in the winter time ,but on February ( hottest month of the year) 90% of my flock where sneezing and crouching around. was scary to go to inside the coops night time. sounded like a hospital .

I thought I was going to loose them all .but I was wrong. I gave them antibiotic for ornamental bird ( very strong ) for one weeks and every body come up alright . lost 10 bird.

Rat are bad.

the vet I sometimes go to usually does not charge anything. he is an expert for dogs and cats and as more people are getting chickens these days he is willing to learn. so we help each other.

this time I don't think I will loose any in my big flock. I have 1 with water belly, I guess she is diying, another one very weak, cannot walk. she had cancker about 2 months ago but she hasn't been in good shape since winter. I have 1 naked neck with a bit swollen toe, sneezing a bit but she laid an egg yesterday. these 3 are separated from the rest (especially from the boys).

my bcm roo mario looks skinny compared to your boys. I think he never reached 3 kg. he is 1 year old. I guess he will not grow any more.
