International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

my pullet expelled a few more dead worms. there are still grains in her crop. I am worried she might have too many dead worms that she cannot expel. I have just given her some egg yolk with olive oil and I will later give her some water with iodine. :fl

Hi I'm new to BYC, and have a few questions about my BC Marans chicks. I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, or if I should have started a new thread...

But my question is, what color legs are best for Black Copper Marans? I have one Cockerel with slate legs, and other younger chicks with yellow. When I looked on the Marans site, it didn't mention leg color, only feathering and shank color. Should I be breeding for a specific color, or is one more desired over the other for SOP?

Thanks!
Welcome to the Thread! All questions are welcomed so you’ve come to the right place. The folks on this thread are very supportive and willing to share their knowledge. There is a lot of great Marans Information on this thread so I suggest you start reading from the beginning when you have time but do not hesitate to ask questions in the meantime.

BCM Chicks from hatch to a few days old should have slate (grayish) shanks / legs with pink (may appear somewhat orange) feet / toes. By the time they are 4-6 weeks old they should have slate colored shanks / feet. If any BCM Chick retains the yellow legs as it matures then it raises the question if the bird is purebred. Your chicks are still young so no reason to worry at this stage.

Take Care,
Keith

Best of luck with your pullet! You are her best chance to pull through this so keep doing what you’re doing.

Take Care,
Keith
