Please tell me more about the broody line. My Blue hen was the best. Her first time she hatched 11 out of 12 and took amazing care of them. She wounded me several times, she was very protective. All 11 were strong and healthy.

breeding a broody line is similar to breeding any other trait .
first I had to find a good broody hen ,than I had to raise a son from her , mated her to him and got a BC1 pullets and cockerels .
mated the mother hen to her BC1 cockerel and got BC2( Back cross 2) pullets and cockerels .all pullets from this line goes broody . bred true for this trait .
this line is my broody line . I m going to breed more of them and make sure I do not cross them to the other lines so I do not loose control

so sorry to for your losses. you lost a fortune.

have you ever tried to put a piece of 90% shade cloth in the chicken runs. those cloths people use in the garden. it helps a bit as temperature under it is about 10 degrees lower.

I do have most of runs covered from the side to stop the wind .
all my chooks are in the orchid .plenty of shade and tall grass for them to hide .it is just too hot .
all the ones I lost had some health problem .
the healthy one plus the young ones are fine .

today has been very cool 25 Dc plus a lot of rain last nigh .we needed this break .
all good .

one of my pullets is sick. she cannot digest food. I didn't feel anything in her crop except some corn that might be sitting there for at least 48 hours. I went to the vet but he knows almost nothing about chickens. as she laid 1 soft shelled egg 2 days ago and her digestive system is not functioning he suspects IB. as I had IB in my flock I really doubt it. she has no respiratory symptoms.

did anyone had any similar situation? the pullet expelled 1 worm yesterday. I gave her human vermox but she did not expel any other worms. she cannot walk properly. I guess she is in pain.

worm can weaken the chooks .

how she is doing now after you gave her Vermox ? hope she recovered

Seven weeks, first foray out of the coop, there are some nice pullets in this group.

I do not see any short back .
they look long to me and well put together .
look at this cockerel .I like him

the pullet on the left ,very long back

they are all Early feathering type . very good .

my Dear friend if you did not mark witch egg come from witch hen ,than will be very hard for you to know witch is a Royal blood line .witch hen is throwing the best chicks .best cockerels or best pullets or both .

Hope you did mark those eggs and you know who is who . other wise will be very hard for you to isolate and fix the trait by back crossing .

I like they tails .,they body type ,hackle marking . width at the shoulders and they true black plumage .

mark the cockerel on the right for me . he has the best body shape and his tail is held lower . straight legs . he look s solid .
he is my favorite now .

Hi I'm new to BYC, and have a few questions about my BC Marans chicks. I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, or if I should have started a new thread...

But my question is, what color legs are best for Black Copper Marans? I have one Cockerel with slate legs, and other younger chicks with yellow. When I looked on the Marans site, it didn't mention leg color, only feathering and shank color. Should I be breeding for a specific color, or is one more desired over the other for SOP?
