International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I m waiting for Tony2 photos .please .

I have been offering you my expertise and I m really good at it .
I only asked for photos of your flock .nice photos ( working photo .no just going to the ward and take a few random photos .)

if you follow my advice you ll breed great marans strain ,any variety .. but it is up to you guys .

Tony2 is a improvement but you can not see it ,than nothing I can do to help you .
breeding chooks is a art no just rooster and hens mating /multiplying .

breeding chooks need plan and strategy . we need to know what we are breeding .what we are trying to correct or to breed true .we can t just wait for some magic to happen .

we have done well but you are not happy about it .those major faults are not going just to go away by them selves .

you bred nice pullets .far I m concern you pullets line is ready to rock when the pullets are ready to breed .no far off . you only need 2/3 very nice pullets not a truck load . selective breeding only the best goes forward to breed .

now you need one nice cockerel to mate to your best hens not all of them ,only the one with a good comb and tail even just one hen will be enough .

all the best my friend .
Don t give Tony2 away like you did with Claude . that will be too many mistake in a short time .

@Chooks man
No No my friend. I love your help and believe in all you tell me. We have done well and I could never have done it without you. Look where I started. You are the reason for any success I have. I want to work on my major faults, my birds and my own! I need your help. I always recognized your knowledge and what a wonderful mentor you are. I just meant it would be nice to have someone to stand in my yard and chat about my birds.

I will post pics of Tony2. If you think he is that good I will certainly keep him.

So envious of those tails!

Thank you @kfelton0002 .
those traits where not there when I started 4 years ago .
I started with Black hens, bent comb .white earlobes etc.......... light egg color .
now I have many many line to work with all made in my farms ,bred by me ,only bought few key roosters last 2 years .( Djabel and Zambezi) .

now that I established the body type . body carriage and the eggs colors .I have to more to the detail .sleeking up the chooks . eys color/ comb type. wattle type etc ..........

one step at the time .

now I know all my hens ,what they throw .what they carries as recessive every thing about they genetic make up .

from now on ,wil be easy ride .

I don t see the problem with Tony2

Ok his tail is not that great but is mile better than his Sire Antonio.

the good thing far I m concern is his comb . you did a magic leap . his comb is almost perfect .
breed him just for that .
Tony2 over your best hens . best tail . that is your cockerels line . nice Comb line.
Antonio over his best pullets . that is your pullets line .great type and body color .nice tail

one more spare cockerel .

if you do that .than the next progeny will be great .a lot to select from .a lot correct bird .
pick the best of each line and cross them together . to blind all the good traits you are willing to breed .

I like Tony2 . nice body color and great comb .what else I need from the Roo .

Thanks I will follow your plan.

if you follow my plan you ll end up having the best BCM line in the country .

2 breeding pens. 2/3 pullets/hens in each pen . plus your layer pen with a spare cockerel .very simple .

@RedBanks

I never give away a cockerel with comb like that .. he has fault .so what it is not the end of the world .
the way I see it ,he is a improvement . that is plus plus in my book .
we can not fix all the fault in one generation .other wise every human been will be chooks breeder .
even his tail is better than Antonio .still high but @ 75Dg angle not 90.

you done well .you have to appreciate you work my friend.

My boys fight too.. its nothing serious, just a bloody comb here and there. Tony2 is still a nice looking bird. His only drawback really is his tail, like you said. I agree with Chooks man, if you breed him to your best tailed hens you can really bring that tail angle down.

Happy day! Just ordered my chicks. Can't wait! Won't get them until last week of march so guess I better get on that 2nd coop. I only ordered 5 marans for this go. And a few types for fun eggs. And a few black partridge silkies. Really want a broody and couldn't help myself. Crazy. 2 years ago I'd get so annoyed when a hen went broody. Now I'm annoyed she hasn't yet and I'm going to have to do the work.

well happy for you .
nothing can beat the mama broody hen . she always does a great job for free .
I m heading that direction too .have many broody hens this time .all bred from one hen ,Scandinavia Birchen .

good luck with your order

I am always so busy studying the cockerels that I did not notice one of the pullets is cow hocked, knock kneed or whatever you call it in chickens. She is a nice big pullet but her legs form a triangle. Picture today sometime just a busy morning. Definitely not a breeder.
