International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

if you want to show ,why you don t show your pullets .they are mile and miles better than him . you posted some stunning photos of your young pullets.
I find the cockerel has many fault .high tail .bad comb and folded wattles .the rest is great .
the chooks are your .entre any one you like .it is just my opinion that all .

Thank you for your input. I know they have multiple flaws but I was just getting a little eager to show some of the cockerels I guess. I was hoping to take several birds. Probably a couple Marans pullets, a Cream Legbar pullet, and maybe a Cream Legbar cockerel if his tail doesnt get any higher. I may not take any Marans cockerels next month to the show and just wait to see if there are nicer ones grown out for some fall shows. :)

Ok.
When you cull do you have a freezer camp pen or do you rehome? Just curious.
And could you by any chance help me understand what Wild type genes are?
I’m very confuzled.
This thread has so much good information. I know it is really a long thread but..... it would be worth your time to start at the beginning and read when you have the time. It can help sort things out.

Got a picture of my oldest cockerel from Apollo and Sheraz (#60). High tail.. but otherwise he is a nice looking bird. He is about 6 to 6.5 months old. I might just be taking this boy to the show next month. :)

He looks a lot like his sire.

I think showing is about more than winning. I mean I WANT to win but I also want the judge's opinion. I think it is very beneficial to have an expert look at whatever creature I am showing and tell me what they like and don't like. It helps to have outside eyes. I often suffered from kennel blindness with my dogs. Now I call it coop blindness. I say if your going to take your best hen why not take him too. Don't enter him if you don't want to.... talk to other people, maybe you already do. I know you know show people. I would love a BCM person to come to my yard and provide some guidance. Too bad Chooks man is in NSW!

You are like me, everyone's birds are better than yours and you are very hard on them but don't let that stop you. Get out there, that is how you are going to learn.

Having said all that.... I see the same problem I am facing with mine in your cockerel. He has a nice long back but his back is level and I am not qualified to make these comments but I think it makes the tail be at a 90.

I am going to post pictures probably tomorrow but I am going to rehome Tony2 and five of the cockerels I have. There is no way they are going to out grow the problems I see. I will say Tony2 has a lot of great things going for him, no white, nice comb but he has a Kelloggs Corn Flakes rooster body. Just a small valley between tail and head. High tail!

Post pics! Not that I can help just quite yet but I love to hear the feedback from the veterans

We love pics and "describing" the BCM! We all learn each time someone posts pictures. I was thinking the other day if someone (like me) is suffering from coop blindness it really is beneficial to take a picture. If you are going to post pics you will get the best description by posting, side, front, back and head pictures.

Oh no I had such high hopes for Tony 2! Dang these high tails! I feel your pain..
:hit

I want to win, essentially I would love for my birds to bring home ribbons and prizes but if they never win a show I still think I can learn a lot from all the show folks. And I think it will be fun. It may take me 5 years or longer to correct some of the issues I face with my birds but hopefully I'll get there, and you will too. Even though most of my cockerels have high tails, I do see an improvement on the length of their back over their sire. Improvement may be gradual but I'll take a small improvement over no improvement.

I have a lot of culls, but the cockerels all look better than Apollo in the sense they dont have a squirrel tail like he is showing now and they all have longer backs. One of Apollo's sons will replace him this year so that is a tiny step in the forward direction for my line A birds.

It's hard and frustrating but we've gotta hang in there!

I m waiting for Tony2 photos .please .

I have been offering you my expertise and I m really good at it .
I only asked for photos of your flock .nice photos ( working photo .no just going to the ward and take a few random photos .)

if you follow my advice you ll breed great marans strain ,any variety .. but it is up to you guys .

Tony2 is a improvement but you can not see it ,than nothing I can do to help you .
breeding chooks is a art no just rooster and hens mating /multiplying .

breeding chooks need plan and strategy . we need to know what we are breeding .what we are trying to correct or to breed true .we can t just wait for some magic to happen .

we have done well but you are not happy about it .those major faults are not going just to go away by them selves .

you bred nice pullets .far I m concern you pullets line is ready to rock when the pullets are ready to breed .no far off . you only need 2/3 very nice pullets not a truck load . selective breeding only the best goes forward to breed .

now you need one nice cockerel to mate to your best hens not all of them ,only the one with a good comb and tail even just one hen will be enough .

all the best my friend .
Don t give Tony2 away like you did with Claude . that will be too many mistake in a short time .
