International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

View attachment 1358228 Yeah!!! Picked them up at 5 am. Shipped all the way from California! Only got 4 marans. The rest are 1 cream legbar, 3 welsummer, and 2 "sage egger" (a mix they created - in guessing CL and welsummer). Their flock is having broody issues so they weren't able to fill my order completely at this time which I'm okay with. I think @RedBanks said he could tell sex on day old marans? May test your skills for fun later :)

Yay! They are so stinkin cute!! Congrats on your newest additions! Hooray for chicken math! :D

Oh shit.

Well then who is Keith? Aliases!!!

Edit to add - ordered 5. I have chester- a blue copper - from the same breeder. I'd like to not breed all their line so will add some from another either this fall or in spring. Will be hard to beat them though. They have nice birds.

Edit again: ya know. I'm not terribly embarrassed. I know red banks chickens when I see them!
Better that you recognize my chickens than me..... Keith is KCrandall he owns Otis etal. I think you have 1 cockerel and 3 pullets! #3 is a cockerel and maybe #2 but I don't think so. Nice chicks, good pictures. Maybe you won't have to outcross.

They sure seem spunky for just traveling the full length of the country. I've ordered from them before and never had a sick chick. Lighting is as natural as I can get for now. @RedBanks :)

I usually can tell the of sex my Marans as chicks by their size. The males are bigger and more robust, while the females are smaller and more dainty. It's difficult for me to say whether yours are male or female, but hopefully Redbanks will come along and look them over. The ones that are darker in the face are usually pullets in my experience, but I'm sure that differs from line to line. Pullets have a darker comb and beak than the males also, usually. The ones with less pigment on their combs tend to be boys.

One more thing...... darn I forgot how it works, oh.....another way I tell is when they start to get a tail. If they are slow feathering, pullets will have a tail and cockerels won't.
Look at the pick of 3 & 4 sideways facing each other. You can see a tail on the pullet and not on the cockerel (3).
