International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hi RedBank ;

it is a wise move to keep one breed with a few compatible varieties to work with. this way of breeding will give a great result and avoid inbreeding .

here an Example of the marans breeds compatible varieties ,they work very well with each other plus they enhance each each other too.

Black copper , Blue copper. Golden cuckoo maran and the Blue golden .all the 3 varieties are from the same family genetic ER/ER .s+/s+ , Gold based chooks ( hackles family )

Birchen , blue Birchen ,silver cuckoo and a Blue silver cuckoo . ER/ER. S/S . Silver based chooks ( hackles family )

the rest of the varieties are not compatible with each other and has to be kept /bred pure.

it is nice to have 3 pens of pure marans varieties like BCM .BLCM and A GCM they complete each other rather than 3 different breeds ,have nothing to do with each other.

we have to do a good breeding to move the marans breeds forward ,, we do not just multiply them . does not take us or the breeds any where except flooding the land with a bad chooks.

We can do this sort of thing if we organize ours selves and go forward one step /one season at the time. fixing one trait at each breeding season .

Yes Chooks Man..... I am listening. I have thought about what you have written. The pens, the plans. I have just been letting things happen because I didn't know where to begin. I need to get organized. I have to have a plan. So does that mean down the road I can have Blue Birchens?

Good day RedBank;

if you keep working with just a marans you have a as many as you can handle .

with the excellent BCM stock you have technically it is better for you and easier if you add the Blue copper and the GCM .

especially the GCM they need few dedicated breeder with a great BCM stock to recreate them. a lot people are putting a lot work on the wrong type based bird e+ red chest hen s Wrong type .they are not ER/ER.
the French standard call for the ER/ER based bird.

AH the Blue Birchen .I don t know they situation in your country . they are getting fashionable in Europe .I m working on them too .I m in the first generation F1 So only the pullets are silver birchen ,all the cockerels from this cross where a cull .

what about the Birchen ? any good breeders near you ?

Good day Chooks Man,

Greenfire is going to offer Blue Birchen soon. They already offer Silver Birchen. A lot of people here run there BlCM and their BCM together. What kind of problems does that cause? What would be the benefits?

Chooks Man,

A couple of months ago I sent you a picture of a light colored Cuckoo, I didn't know what he was. You thought he was a double barred silver. I rehomed him but I have to tell you that cute little cockerel turned into the ugliest bird I have ever owned. I should have taken a picture.

I do have some Cuckoos, 5 pullets. They are not quality they are just for my laying flock. They are clean legged.

Chickengr .it is nice to joint forces with other breeder to exchange genetic and information .

to fix the comb you need one of the 2 parent breeder with a nice comb. hatch a lot ,do a lot culling and you will be left with some few with nice comb.

let say the rooster have a nice comb MATE him with chosen hen with a bad comb= you will get some pullets with a nice comb ( maybe just a few pullets )
mate his pullets with a nice comb to they fathers to get the 2end generation F2 pullets and cockerels with a nice comb.

any fault can be fixed with a good breeding plan, space, and rising a lot chicks from a breeding pair .

I Like the way you feed your chooks .all home made ,No supermarket stuff.

you can boil a barley for them .it is nicer when boiled ,they love t

thanks.

I hope my pullet will have better comb. her father's comb is not perfect but is good. last night I put her and her brother in the marans pen but this morning only marko was there. luna is very flighty and went back to her old run. I still don't want to cut her wing feathers. marko seems to be fine there, I even found 2 araucana girls with him, love at the first sight, lol. besides bcm I want some olive eggers (they don't exist in greece) and dark layers nacked necks.

can you tell me about the splash colour? I have got a splash araucana/ameraucana mix pullet which I plan to breed with marans. what colour of chicks can I expect? and how could I get splash colour (different breeds)?

hi Chickengr Do you like to receive some marans fertile from France ? for free.

you know I Know a lot people how can send you some eggs before the season close, no much time let.

I know Monique and she is always ready to ship fertile marans eggs any where in the wold.

she is a legend .

let me know I can organize that.

Hi RedBank if you thinking of getting a blue birchen you have to get a Birchen to run them together to keep the balance of the Blue .

running a blue and a black together is actually good , they should be run together to avoid getting the splash and to balance the blue.

the french Marans Club breeders association encourage running the Black and the Blue together either way . Blue X black or Black X Blue no culling is produced from this sort of matting .

a good splash come from a pure established splash line .Sp X Sp = Sp.

can you post some photos of you 5 silver cuckoo hens.in then cuckoo marans thread .there is my work there , I see what I can spot on them .

you only need the barring gene from them to recreate the GCM ,because you have 2 nice BCM blood night.

I ll show how if you are interested , I m working with Morbius18 on his GCM variety.

Hi Chickengr if you cross your Splash hen s to a Black copper marans roster you will get F1 hybrid 100% Blue copper.

you will get the hybrid vigor from this sort of cross . ( mean bigger chooks )

thank you very much! I don't have an incubator and we don't have broodies before september (due to heat). when is the end of season for hatching? my friend breeder sold his incubator, I will see if he will get a new one. I do prefer broodies.

blue copper olive eggers sound great to me. what colours are used to get splash? I have a sort of blue/copper - gold araucana/ameraucana mix with my bcm. would some of her chicks be splash? I guess besides colour true bcm have single comb and olive eggers should have modified pea comb so I should always be able to recognize them.
