I didn't see this post when I mentioned Laurent's coop in another post. I like it very much but I use very different kind of coop here. It is so hot and walls are not necessary. I built one exactly like the first one below without the nesting box. The second picture is my first coop but the nesting boxes are too small and too high so I block them off. The first picture is a coop I copied. The coop maker is in Arizona, you can see the desert all around. Hot and dry there. Hot and wet where I am. Mild winters if any. No solid walls works best for me.

I like them open design no wall .how many chooks you house there.

no much grass going on around.

we have very bad southerly wind very cold in the winter , they have to bee inside . temperature around 0 to 7 degree Celcus at night.

Quote: Top photo is Arizona Desert. I have an exact copy of that coop. Bottom coop is in the Florida winter. We are currently in very hot summer 95-100 F rain all the time. I have 4 pens. When they free ranged all day I kept more chickens. Now I have 10 - 12 each pen. Pens are 2- 8X8, 6X10 and 8X5.

Everything is very green, Lush! Lots to eat for the chooks.

It is lush green , great for the chooks .a lot trees too .

Bello and his ladies.

why you don t build a big run for each coops ,than you have them free all the time each group in they run . night time they go in they coop. you close door.

I do not feel goog about let my chooks free free like yours, Except my favorite coop close to the house ( white storm and his ladies.)

I give them a big run ( 10 msq by chooks ) a lot space for them ,but they are protected from the predator . they can go in and out any time they like.

when there is no grass left .I move the coop to a new run with a fresh grass. and I ll replant the old run with a new grass and legume for the chooks when they will back to it next time after 3 months .

Need a lot space for this system . but I like t never kill my soil . always fertile Not Acidic with the chooks poo.

I was lucky for awhile..... no predators until recently. I loved having them roam free. Happy birds doing what comes naturally. I am going build a big open area for them to spend the day. Those woods you see are where the predator has been getting them. My sisters lake is back there. Perfect home in the woods for all kinds of creatures.

Yes.... Bello and his girls.

Those little cuckoo marans looking chicks are my olive eggers. They all have feathered legs Cream Legbar over Marans Hens.

yeah I think is a good idea to build a ruin for them . safe from predator and safe from mixing up during the breeding season .

plus you don t have to have them locked in all the time.

Hi there .
if this rooster is the sire of this cockerel than you have no worries about type. what you have to worry about is the Black shoulder , Absence of the Autossomal Red .he should have a rich red shoulder
gather than that he is stunning . I like a lot his hackle great copper and not too many flame ( almost nine)
and I like a lot the color of his shanks .
his eyes are sublime .

if his son hasn t got a red shoulder when adult, than you have to correct that by mating him to a hen with a coppery chest and less sheen .

chest color and the red shoulder both are controlled by the Autossomal Red Ar . not sex linked like the hackle and the lancets.
