International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

This is my first small group of BCMs, and I'd love some feedback on these two. I originally got BCMs just for the dark eggs, but the more I find out about breeding to standard, the more fascinated I become! Are either of these two worth breeding?

This is Pinky Pie. He's 5 months old and seems to be getting more color every day. I know his comb isn't ideal...any thoughts on how to fix it?

And this is Tangerine. She's also 5 mos.

Thanks!
you BCM are one step closer to greatness .

his comb is good ( not exellent but good no far of ) the comb is from the hen .

the pullets tangerine is great type too .

Both have one problem ( if they are related than is good ,could be fixed without adding any thing to them .) they have dark eyes .

the cockerel brown eyes no bad neither good
pullets Dark eyes .

we breed to the French Standard and your cockerel comb is perfect .
5 point well define all end on the same line at the base SO NO m s or double .
the back could be rounded or like your has a half way point.

look at the photos I posted of the book and magazine I got from the French marans club . look at the comb of the rooster on the book cover.

if you breeding for other standard than I don t know and I don t care about them .

This is just a learning exercise but on this comb is the dip between the blade and the last point too shallow. I really want to learn combs and just can't seem to get it right.

Glad to hear my cockerels have good combs. After being in Chooksman's class on this thread I swear one of these days I will get the hang of combs. I enjoy learning about Marans and seeing everyone's beautiful birds. I learn a little more every time I log on. I want to do my best to breed the best birds I can so I can contribute something positive to this wonderful breed.

We really do. At least we dont have to worry about being lynched up by the mob if we have a bird with an imperfection or ask a question.
:D

I have to say @RedBanks , cockerel #1 looks very similar to FRF's pure LP sire. A girl can be hopeful! Maybe he sired my cockerel as well.

Cockerel 1 . great type .
nice long flat back
nice head
nice eyes ( when green /blue at a young ages mean they will be well colored when adult )
well marked chest and deep
well feathered shanks .
nice wide shoulder and rear .
nice pure black and well colored hackle

I m not sure about his leg looking at him from the front the seem bending inward OR just crouching because he is on a top of bucket or some thing .

you tell us please .

cockerel too .great body type nice and long .
great hackle color
nice comb
nice shanks color enough feathers on them .

from the rear the tail is tilted on one side a little .
legs are a same as cockerel 1 seem to be bent inward .

I think they are not happy about the photos stand set up .( need improvement )

look at his back there is a little cushion here .( a little bump I can see it not but is there). not a big deal I m just been snobby a little .

NOTE ; cockerel like him Early feathering type mated to a hen late feathering type will give sex linked chicke .all the pullets will be early feathering type and the cockerels late feathering types .

Don't let that comb keep you from using him. Chooks man is going to yell at us. The comb comes from the hen.

the comb if was so hard to breed why the serious chooks breeders I know they leave it tell last because is a easy fix and come from back .one back crossing and is done .

Egg color
eyes color
Removing the Autossomal Red from a silver strain .
Keeping a rich Red copper on the rooster .
keeping a nice coppery hackle on the hens
keeping the rear of both sexes wide and strait forming a pyramid with a top of the tail ( marans trait when looked from the rear)

All this are the serious business NOT
the comb .
wry tail .
feathered shanks
wattle
fluff

are easy one corect parent plus one back crossing to the proper bird.to reinforce the trait.

learn the most important thing first .
