International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Getting ready for the freezer. One lucky guy will be saved. It's a toss up between 3 of the 10. My favourite one body wise is too dark( hackle colour more mahogany and not too much of that and not much saddle color at all) but he's huge. Second is not much smaller, proper colour but not much saddle colour so far. Third is smaller( not nessasarily undersize) and has decent colour throughout. I just kinda like the 2 big boys( they were from smaller nice colour roo over an all black hens that were quite large

Baunlee,

Better pics would help us to give a more precise opinion. In the first pic, the two cockerels to the far left and front left (near the wood box) caught my eye. They are young but have good copper hackles, copper ear tufts and copper flecking on the breast. The cockerel to the far left appears to have dark eyes but this could just be the camera. In the second pic, this cockerel is over-melanized. If you were going to breed him then I would suggest he be bred to a well colored hen of very good type then prepare to cull heavy. Given your choices I would go with the better colored cockerels with the best type.

you seem to know what you are looking for ,so make your mind .

with witch hens are you going to breed him ( the chosen cockerel ) ,the black hens they come from or different line all together ?

any of the rooster you have there is good to breed him with a Australorp but if you want to breed them to a marans hens ,you better show us the hens too so we can find a much ..

Not a big cockerel .Not a well colored one .
we are looking for the one who compliment the hens .

so if I don t se he hens ,I don t know witch one to pick .

I can see a lot colorful BCM cockerels .

if you are going to work with a same hens ( mothers ) than chose a better colored one with a nice comb .

I noticed most of them have a bad comb .I love to see they mothers .

Never chose a marans rooster for breeding because he is big . that wrong .we chose a better colored rooster , because the color pattern and type of color come from the roster .
chose the correct body type and well colored even if he is a smallest one .
size come from the mother hen ( the egg dictate the size of the chicks .)

what a day .running around a chooks to catch them is not a easy job.

all done ,every body is penned in . a clock is ticking . soon the incubator will be full .

tomorrow I need to build a doors . all the timber is cut ,just need to put them together ,some chooks wire ,hinges Et VOILA done .for the time been at least one month .

they are going to stay indoor for one month easier to monitor how they are doing and what they need . after the first hatch I ll transfer the breeders outdoor .( I have to build a pens first ) .this pens building doesn t seem to stop .I just build 14 pens in one month .doesn t look much at all .

here few photos .

there is 8 pens in this side of the shade .( 2 pens X10mSq each. 6 pensX 7 mSq each )
another 3 pens in the back of the shade ( Gladiator pen _ all my cockerels 16 _ pen is 36 mSq. plus a 2nd cockerel pen for the new one 18 mSq .plus a pullets pen 24 mSq )
3 pens on the left hand side of the shade ,breeders pens . each pen is 14 mSq.

here the parent stock of my new and future Hercules juniors .

White Storm Rooster ,66 % chance he carries a Db gene ( dark brown responsible of turning a wheaten hen to Black tail buff )

his 2 Birchen ladies sisters F2 , Oslo and Copenhagen both carries a Co gene Colombian ( gene responsible of restricting the black to the hackle and tail - Colombian ) .

enjoy

This is the cockerel I'm hoping to keep. Not much colour yet but I had one a cpl years ago that was about the same and coloured up perfect by 9 months. These are all 4.5 month old. A few pullets in the background are over melanized, not sure what to do with them yet

Hens that these came from, except I believe the roo came from one of my over melanized hens. The proper colour hens throw a fair bit of colour. They are all pretty much identical, slight variation of leg feathering but all pretty close with body and tail.
