International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Anyone have pink feet coming out in a cockerel?? It's really strange. Don't have a picture but as the temps lower he seems to have developed pink-ish feet, shanks and toe ends and black but not the entire thing.

All of my cockerels have pink feet. He is correct according to the SOP.

white or lightly pink coloured for all the varieties except for the BLACK, BROWN-RED and BIRCHEN Marans
were grey or dark grey is permitted, although not preferred, for both sexes.
Four long and well separated toes with the outer one sparsely feathered.
The claws are white or horn- coloured

Except for black, is what I'm reading. Is this not a correct interpretation ? That reads to me differently.

chickengr is correct. It reads that all Marans have white or lightly pink colored legs, Black, BCM and Birchens are permitted to have grey or dark grey but it is not preferred. This is the French SOP.

acv in water and some oil, either syringed or in feed might help. whole BOSS as well.

He seems to be doing fine without any intervention at this point. If he gets thin or stops eating I may intervene, but our motto remains that chickens will take care of themselves with little intervention from us, and if they become ill with something they cant easily recover from we dont want them as brood stock anyway. Its kind of harsh I guess but only the healthiest and vigorous birds go into the brood pens. I do what I can for sick birds but sometimes you just have to step back and let nature take its course. If he starts to look like he is suffering we will cull.

And I had been adding ACV to his water prior to the probiotics and his sour crop seemed to resolve but the partial obstruction is persistent. Thanks for the oil tip! I may try it if it doesnt resolve on its own. At this point Im just going to watch him for a few days. :)

Yes breed him to a hen with a good comb and cull hard.  It is recessive so it probably means it is somewhere in my birds too!

I lost a very nice big FRF pullet.  She was egg bound and I could not help her.  I don't like to interfere too much in these situations as I feel that the hen is inherently weak and it would just happen again.  She was a very sweet beautiful pullet, I hated to lose her.

I don t think any rooster have or had a bad comb like my Charlie the silver cuckoo .

go back and read the post .I posted photos of his comb and the photos of the combs of his progeny SLEEK has an excellent comb ( SLEEK is an F2 )

we are working with an no inbred chooks ,so what we see doesn t mean they are a true breeders for that trait ( fault or quality ).so we can breed from and move on the a new progeny ( better if it is larger) and chose the best one .

I have been saying the Show chook and the Breeder chook are different .

we need to breed our own line ,so we ll know what we are doing and how to work with them .

chooks man

Good to hear! I was concerned when I noticed the side sprig because on another page I am a member on everyone is all mobs and pitch forks to any Marans with a side sprig. Lol

Sorry to hear about your pullet Redbanks! We have lost a couple of cocks to our pup playing too rough lately. Losses are an inevitable but no less tragic part of raising chickens. :(

Hello everyone! I haven't been able to check posts for a few weeks due to being so busy and have so much reading to catch up on! I'm currently enjoying watching my Lavender Marans babies grow up (they're 2 months now) and wishing the 3 BCM chicks I got hadn't all turned out to be boys. That said, any recommendations for breeders with consistently good pullets? I need some girls to breed with Pinky Pie since none of my six are close to SOP. I'd love to get my hands on layers, but will take younger pullets or even (sigh) hatching eggs. Any thoughts on what characteristics I should be looking for to mesh with Pinky's? Thanks! (Here's a reminder of Pinky, though I need to get more recent shots since he has a little more copper now.)
Winterhorses, Pinky is an absolute stud! Bred him true and often - you will get excellent progeny from him. Keith
