International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I lost my BCM rooster to a hawk attack yesterday. He saved every single one of his hens and somehow survived the attack but was so severely injured we had no choice but to euthanize him. I had been having mixed feelings about him for some time as he had shown aggression issues towards me a handful of times, but I am so grateful to him for giving his life to save his flock.
I have two of his sons in the basement, they are just a couple of weeks old, so hopefully one will grow into a lovely rooster with a temperament more like his mother's.

So sorry to hear about your brave roo, but I'm glad you have two of his kiddos. Good luck with them!

Look at all those cuties! I hope they all turn out to be nice ones.

I m so pleased to have them , how they turn up when mature is a different story .

I don t have many yet but I do have one or 2 chicks come out of each variety .

my favorite is a Blue cuckoo pullet , she is cute and well chunky .

I ll take more photos of them in few days when they are fully wake .

love them more than any thing in the farm .

chooks man

Right when I had given up on my first BCM egg until spring, one of my LA girls gave me this big beautiful thing today! I am absolutely thrilled! It had to be a LA pullet, the FRF pullet doesn't feel wide enough yet.

No flash, kitchen lighting, next to Leghorn eggs for contrast.

It is definitely not a pullet size egg! I would consider it a large or even jumbo size. lol. Note to self: buy batteries for gram scale.

Went ahead and moved all the BCM's around tonight to where I want them for breeding season so the pullets can get cleaned out. I can start setting in a couple weeks for safe measure if I keep getting eggs.

Cooper is the king of the LA coop with his 3 lovely LA ladies and 3 Speckled Sussex layers.

Mud will be covering the FRF pullet, 3 Splash Copper pullets, 4 Speckled Sussex layers, and an Easter Egger (layer). He's going to be a busy boy.

Took some random pics yesterday before feeding time.

This is Rusty (FRF cockerel, side sprig, short back, high tail). In these pics he looks okay, but in others he looks terrible.

Rusty again

Rosie, one of our GP's. Our fearless protector.

FRF cull.. one hot mess of a cockerel. He is just all wrong. This is a perfect example of what you don't want in a BCM. lol

Rusty again.. this pic shows his short back and high squirrel tail. Otherwise his color is beautiful and he is a big solid feeling rooster. I will keep him as a backup to Mud.
