International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Quote:
Square tail is well spread in the marans flock in the US .
I have seen a lot people preaching and telling other to bread the square tail and the open tail . NOT a great advice they are giving .

Marans has to have a thin pointed tail held between 45 and 60 Degree' .

it is going to take you a quite some time to breed it out specially if you have not a bird with a pointed tail

Wring his neck and have yourself a nice pot of chicken soup! Don't beat yourself up, it wasn't your fault. Thank goodness it wasn't your baby, that is a silver lining. Sometimes a rooster crops up with a nasty attitude, it happens. We just have to cull and prevent those roosters from spreading their genetics to future offspring. Hopefully your next cockerel will be gentle as a kitten, to his hens and your family.

I should have gotten this cockerel taken care of immediately! My 8 year old son went to lock up the coop last night as it was getting dark and all the chickens were at roost. He went into the pen and shut the door behind him [a habit I made him adopt] to access the pop door that needed shut. That cockerel came flying out of the pop door and started attacking him. My son couldn't get away from him as the cockerel was blocking his exit. Everytime my son went to go out the door the cockerel attacked him. So he had to just grit his teeth through the pain to get out of there. It is like this on both legs. He was wearing lined pants as well. I feel so awful. This is 100% my fault. A part of me thought the cockerel was just working out his hormones and would settle down. We don't have time for him to settle down. If he would have attacked my 2 year old lime this he could have been chicken food. Makes me sick thinking about it. When I get home this afternoon I'll have to take care of it.

I know this isn't contributing to the thread in a positive way but you guys are the closest to chickens friends that I have and wanted to share. Hopefully one of the chicks I hatched will be a much more gentle cock to our family.

Don't beat yourself up, some Roosters go bad no matter how well they are raised. Time for him to go in the gumbo pot. When a Rooster attacks me I snatch him up by his feet then let him hang until he calms down then I lay him on his back and will not let him get up until I say so. Once or twice should get the message across that I am not to be messed with but if that doesn't work then he goes in the pot. As a rule I do not handle my Roosters unless necessary for treatment or transferring pens. When I go in the pens I never walk straight at a Rooster, I move toward his right or left to give him just enough space so he doesn't feel threatened and he'll usually give me my space so I can get my chores done. I find this approach works for me most of the time but some Roosters are, well, just buttheads.

Hope your son heals quickly!
