International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I should have gotten this cockerel taken care of immediately! My 8 year old son went to lock up the coop last night as it was getting dark and all the chickens were at roost. He went into the pen and shut the door behind him [a habit I made him adopt] to access the pop door that needed shut. That cockerel came flying out of the pop door and started attacking him. My son couldn't get away from him as the cockerel was blocking his exit. Everytime my son went to go out the door the cockerel attacked him. So he had to just grit his teeth through the pain to get out of there. It is like this on both legs. He was wearing lined pants as well. I feel so awful. This is 100% my fault. A part of me thought the cockerel was just working out his hormones and would settle down. We don't have time for him to settle down. If he would have attacked my 2 year old lime this he could have been chicken food. Makes me sick thinking about it. When I get home this afternoon I'll have to take care of it.

I know this isn't contributing to the thread in a positive way but you guys are the closest to chickens friends that I have and wanted to share. Hopefully one of the chicks I hatched will be a much more gentle cock to our family.

sorry to hear that.

animals attack when they are afraid. that's why I always talk to them, especially if I have to enter the coop when it is dark so they know it's me and they calm down. people think I am crazy but I know what I am doing.

So, it seems to happen often, but my Marans always hatch later than my cream legbars. I had 10 eggs make it to lockdown, 6 legbar and 4 Marans. All 6 legbar eggs have hatched , today is day 22. After moving everyone to the brooder, I candles and all the Marans eggs still appear to be alive, and had been mixed evenly with the legbar eggs. Is the difference in egg size to blame? Them Maranss have extra large/jumbo eggs!

I have noticed that our Games and Sussex in smaller eggs hatch a day earlier than the Marans. Some of our Games pip and hatch by the end of day 20 and are done hatching by day 21. My Marans so far take until late on the 21st day to hatch and one even hatched during the night going into the 22nd day.

So... we finally got an incubator!! It's a Brinsea Octogon Advance. Anybody have one? We hope to start hatching soon!!

Congrats!! I've always heard good things about Brinsea incubators, but I've never owned one. We have only used GQF incubators. I really like the design of Brinseas and I reckon they hold their temp rock steady. Post pics of your chicks when they hatch! :)
