International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

He was in a pen with another rooster from the same hatch and a bunch of hens for over a year. Then they started fighting so I had to move him. I have been looking for him a good home for at least the last couple months that wouldn't eat him but havn't found one. Now that he is attacking. No one is going to want a mean rooster. Anyone that lives close that will give him a good home. He is all yours.

Yes, I hate to have to butcher him but don't want to be attacked everytime I feed. He was way too aggressive!!! The one rooster that just thumped me. I think if I am careful and keep something between us he might be ok.

whelp, couldn't stay away for long, guys. I would love to report that after much rest and relaxation my chicken troubles have ended...........but it seems the saga of disappointment continues.

So I am here to get some help (and hopefully some advice) from people more experienced than I am. I'm sure I wont explain this well enough so feel free to ask clarifying questions...

• Seller sold me 4 blue birchen marans chicks. Listing only mentioned blue birchen marans. Chicks arrive, only 1 is blue.

• I contact seller. They basically say oh sorry those chicks could actually be "blue black or splash." They change the listing and we discuss how to fix the situation.

• IN THE MEANTIME, that ONE blue chick that I had, yeah, she grew up a little, and the copper started to come in!!

I guess what I'm really asking , is there any way a blue copper marans chick could come out of the same breeding pair that a person might use to get blue birchen marans? or blue black splash

Ive looked online at some inheritance charts and none of the blue combinations seem to mention copper being present for the desired outcome of blue birchen. Would the "blue black splash" comment refer to blue birchen or blue copper?

@Chooks man will explain better. bcm are used to create birchen. it takes years before they breed true. a lot of people don't know it, some don't care just want to make money.

ChooksMan is our forum genetics expert so I'm sure he will weigh in here and will correct me if I say anything that is incorrect.

Birchen is simply a color pattern in poultry. So, Black Copper Marans have a "birchen" pattern. Birchen Marans (Silver) conform in all respects to the Black Copper Marans except the copper/red plumage is replaced by the silver/white plumage. There should be no copper or gold leakage in the Birchen Marans, if leakage exists then one or both parents are not true Birchen Marans (meaning they will not breed true). My understanding is the Birchen Marans is the result of crossing Silver Cuckoo Marans with Black Copper Marans then successive breeding of their progeny until you achieve the pure silver / white plumage.

I would think that Blue Birchens would breed the same as Blue Copper Marans meaning a Blue Birchen pairing should yield 50% Blue Birchen, 25% Black Birchen and 25% Splash. A Birchen Marans (black) bred to a Splash Birchen should yield 100% Blue Birchen.

Your pullet is definitely a Blue Copper Marans (BTW, I love her eye color and copper hackles at her age, very nice). Based on everything you have told us I'm thinking that the Seller a) sold you chicks from a Blue Birchen Project Line (meaning his/her line doesn't breed true at this point (I.e., copper leakage), b) inadvertently sold you chicks from a Blue Copper mating, or c) doesn't have a clue of what is a Birchen Marans. By the looks of your pullet I'm guessing b) or c).

I'm really sorry you didn't get what you wanted or paid for but on the bright side it looks like you have a nice Blue Copper pullet.

this chick is a Blue copper pullet .
her sire is not a pure Birchen rooster .he is a blue/black copper .
pullets always take a body color from they father not from mam .
some body is trying to recreate a blue birchen using a Blue copper over a Birchen hen .

I can tell better if I see a photos of her brother/brothers because they get 50% of it from they mam .

great information. I think my pullet with copper hackles is marco's daughter.
