International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

this one is nice too .almost the same body type .except this one has a small comb.

both of them have a nice black and great body feathering . love them both .

all you hard graft is paying of now .you are determine person ,good on you .

well happy for you

chooks man

thank you.

all the chicks are very fast feathering. even luna and marco who were fast feathering chicks were a bit slower. I am not sure if feeding them sesame seeds and egg yolk has to do something about that.

all of the chicks from the second batch have small combs. is that good or bad?

the small comb and early feathering type are both great trait of the original marans chooks .so we should select for those type of trait .

about the chicks feed .sesame seed and egg yolk is not enough .you have to add some vitamin and mineral too.
liver cod fish oil or any fish oil contain a lot vitamin .
Kelp ( see weed ) has a lot minerals

good luck with your chicks .

I'm pretty sure two of the three BCM I bought are roos, which is fine. I want to keep one, but this is the only one I could get a pic of. I'll try to get another of the other two sometime

That is definitely a Roo. I have hatched enough of these fellows to know. They tend to mature faster than a lot of breeds. The combs for the males show up early. If you are thinking of breeding them, you will find that the FBCM Roo can be stand offish to a man-hater and aggressive. Extra roos are good to have. Either their temperament is wrong, or they don't represent the breed well, and they are very tasty.

In my experience with BCMs I have had both aggressive and respectful roosters. If a Rooster is too agreessive with humans or hens they go in the gumbo pot. I believe the chooks temperament is equal parts genetic and behavioral. When selecting cockerels for future breeders I consider temperament in my decision making process. I also spend as much time as I can with all the chicks for the first 2 months to habituate them to humans. When the cockerels are about 2 months old I introduce 2 or 3 older hens to the grow out pen to teach them good manners. The older hens will put young cockerels in their place real quick. When 3 months old (before their hormones really kick in) I largely ignore the roosters when I enter their pen. I respect their space and they better respect mine while I tend to my chores. When rotating chickens between pens I do so at night so the Rooster doesn't perceive me as a threat to him or the hens. I haven't had any temperament issues with my roosters in the past couple of years. This method seems to work for me but it's not foolproof - no matter how well you raise your chooks there is bound to be a knucklehead or two show up once in a while.

that is not true about the marans rooster .
all the chooks breed have a gentle and the nasty side ,depend how we rise them .

I have about 60 rooster and sub adult marans cockerels ,they are all gentle ,not any type of nastiness to me or to each other . packing order is well respected in my farm . every one know they place.
they are all cool . I rise them and I tough them well ,

they eat complete non gmo chicken mash - starter/grower. sesame seeds and egg yolk are extra.

I tried to feed my avatar chick differently but she had digestion problems (too much egg yolk I guess) so I switched to commercial non gmo starter/grower. luckily it has been a while that 1 feed store started to sell non gmo feed.

as for the rooster's temper I puppy them a lot till they become puppies. I have just bought a 3 mo english araucana cockerel (supposed to be a pullet) and it seems he has bad temper. I will tell you how it will end up. I am slightly suspicious that he will learn the lesson. I have just put my bossy hen with him to teach him a few things.

I raise them like anyone else does, and have raised many sets of chicks, hens and roos to full size. The roos that I have raised have gone from laid back to absolute man haters. Their typical disposition is stand offish. The hens on the hand will squawk when handled, but let you do it. Some breeds are just like that. For instance, I have a Dorking/EE mix rooster for my eating egg girls. My daughter is smallish, and since we got him long before we had an NPIP, she could grab him by the tail feathers and cradle him like a baby doll. He has spurs as long as my fingers, and has never tried to use it against a human ever.

if you are giving them no gmo chicks starter that will enough .don t over load them with egg yolk .20% protein is enough for them .
