luna, mario and marco are not alone. I put the other hens so that the boys can have fun. I just don't hatch the eggs from the other girls. they have plenty of room in their run.

unfotunately mario has some health issues so I think I shouldn't keep himI adore him but cannot risk to have sick chicks. I now have 3 young cockerels to choose from.

I thought you locked her in with a 2 roo and got the fertile egg ( chickenge fertile egg method ). hahahaaaaaaaaaaaa

it is sad to let go but it is nice to to let room for the young one to prove them selves . especially when not many hens available

4 years of line breeding .nothing added to this line .
now it is breeding true for a silver
well spotted chest and great body type

the tail is inherited from both parent .
easy to fix .plus both of her sisters/half sisters have a nice tail . mean the strain do carry the good tail gene .just some times we do see a throw back ( Atavistic Return of the Recessive gene ) low of nature .

I ll used her 1005 in my breeding program if I had her for sure .

I did, very helpful information! In 3 months I will be going through the selection process myself. I'm really liking my pullets - good type, mass, copper hackles, feathered shanks. The only thing I'm not liking about them is they long fanned tails. I'll fix that in future generations. The proof will be in the eggs they lay. My cockerels are showing good color but I have 3 with the dark eyes. One cockerel with the dark eye is showing the best color so far but they all have a lot of growing to do.

at the moment I don't have room for breeding pens. so I keep them as a permanent flock.

I am going to start killing chickens. I need room and I really cannot spend all of my money for food for useless chickens and medicines for the sick ones. I will start with an old blind brahma hen, a 3 yo cockerel who got damaged by canker and a barnyard mix hen that almost always is sick. a friend of mine will take care of them and he will feed his dogs. I still cannot deal with that but I am forced to. in about 2 months my parents will come and they will take care of the other chickens who I don't need and who definitely are not the keepers. I have 16 babies + 5 chickens I bought and 3 ordered.

agree with you in this one 100% does come to the color of the eggs they ll lay .very important .
long fanned tail is easy to fix .I do have this problem with a Wheaten line from SA( Salima) ,but I think I found the rooster who is going to help me to fix it .
from all the 5 wheaten/Salmon rooster I matted her to ,only Massoud ( Salmon rooster ) throw a correct tail progeny . Now I need to select the best cockerels from the 6 brothers to mate him to her and go back to the wheaten .
black eyes on the cockerels is a bad news .you need to be careful when you selecting .don t leave your self short .
like we talked about before ,select a cockerel recording to your breeding hens . the one who complement them .
so if you have a pullet/hen with a good eye color than go for the colorful cockerel even with a dark eye if he has a good body type .
you don t want to many fault packed in one rooster /cockerel

there are no ugly chickens. the ones that are not good for breeding are good for my laying flock. if I move to the country I will be able to afford the foraging flock as well.

as long as they are healthy.

I have a non marans question: 1 of my araucana chicks is a runt. how can I find out if she is a real runt or maybe she got sick and has stunted growth? I have a worm infestation in my flock right now and there is a possibility she has worms too. their mom feed them earthworms.
