International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Just dropping in to say that the eggs I got from Monique have been hatching! I have 17 chicks so far and maybe one or two more :)
There are a few different varieties, Black Copper, White, and 'Coucou a camail argenté', I'm not sure what that is in English? And some eggs she wasn't sure what they were, so it will be a surprise!
They started hatching on Tuesday and unfortunately I've mostly been at work and my husband is looking after them. I'll do a proper review of them at the weekend and post some pictures.

Thank you! Me too.. I'm okay with her eggs so far considering her mother barely laid a 3 and her egg was a lot more elongated than Dentelle's. It may take a few genenerations of breeding the blue coppers back to the black coppers, but egg color and shape will hopefully keep looking better. It's a lot of work but they are fun birds to keep. :)
They are a real challenge aren't they! If I wasn't trying to perfect them there isn't a breed I like better. I love the mumbling and talking. The way they follow me all over the yard and come running when they see me (all food motivated).

I have one hen that lays a very long egg, so long you can't close the egg carton but it is not a double yolk. Should I hatch an odd egg like that?

Hi there,,,

May I ask what's the benefit of eggs marans? I mean is there any specific feature?

James Bond said they were the only chickens/eggs one should eat! Ha Ha
The novelty of the color maybe.... also the color is applied as the egg is laid. They are big eggs, extra large to jumbo. They do taste good but I agree with Kfelton0002, they taste like my other yard eggs. People want to buy them. Because a bird is not considered a Marans unless the egg is at least a 4 it adds another dimension to raising/breeding them.

Can't wait to see them!

I do have two pullets from him though and a cockerel. I will look the cockerel over for white underfluff, but he looks a lot like Mud.

A few weeks before Mud took a turn for the worst, I set two of Gretta's last eggs she laid before she started molting. Gretta is my pure FRF hen. The past few months while I let Mud's hens free range including Gretta, I tied him out near the coop where the hens roosted so he could be close to them. Gretta always stayed near him, and only ate with him. I felt confident that she remained true to Mud and he was the only rooster who mated with her. My cockerels never ventured down our property that far.

I hatched two chicks from her a few weeks ago and they were definitely pure Marans, no question. I am brooding them now and I will keep them safe as they are the last I have of Mud.

@kfelton0002 I know I have put my chickens on the back burner for the last year but..... I can still send eggs from my pure FRF. I can send you the ones I just posted.
