International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@Chooks man, Thank you :) I'll let Ebony know that she's a good looking duck lol.
I can't wait for these girls to start laying so I can see what egg color they give me. Supposedly, they are a mix of LP and GFF lines and are from incredibly dark egg laying parents. The roo (no I didn't train him, he was trying to figure out how to get away from me without getting far from the coop lol) is from a different source. Not the greatest of egg color to be honest so I'll most likely breed him to the girls and raise out some of his sons to find one to replace him. He'll stay as a backup for sure but I'm hoping for good sons from him so I can keep good egg color.

don t under estimate him . some time we lose the egg color in the first crossing but we ll get back in the second generation .

the body type and body color are as important as the egg color .

you ll have some stunning progeny from your trio ,trust me on that .
i see greatness all over them .
all 3 are top nosh breeders ( BREEDERS BY EXCELLENCE )

keep him a life and use him as much as you can .he is truly an asset to you and to all the BCM strain .

he has too much to offer .

As soon as I get my pens set up, there will be no more fighting. This guy loves to try to breed but is not brave enough to stand up to the bigger, tougher boys that come chase him off. My boys honestly don't realy fight, but the higher ups make sure that the lower guys know they're lower. I'd love to try to show someday. Maybe sooner than later though if there are awesome babies from them. You better believe I'll be in here posting pictures from the day their first ones hatch :)

take my word for it .
if you want to show ,just book the cages and incubate from this trio few dozen chicks . you ll fill up all the space in the show for sure .and will be hard to beat you .
breed this trio specifically for the show . as a show line . every thing is there .
you can show your pullets ,they are up there .any way .

Sex Linked genes .within a BCM strain .

we talked about the Silver S and the Gold s+.

now we talk about the b+ gene . the absence of barring , Wild type
this gene give a BCM they black plumage and black under fluff .
the Rooster have 2 copies b+/b+ ,so want him to be pure black ( body wise NOT the colored part ) main feathers and the under fluff . Not grey neither brown( under fluff) .
the hen .has only one copy b+/- .so she is likely a little lighter than the Roo . her main plumage should be pure black but her under fluff could be a dark grey .

the rooster under fluff is very important . pure black , so his daughter will have a proper under fluff even if they mama hen under fluff is not correct .
to breed pullet ,the roo has to be pure black .plumage and under fluff.

if we want to breed a cockerel so we have to make sure both Roo and Hen has to have a pure black plumage and under fluff .

we always see a mossy hens ,not so often we see a mossy rooster .because of this gene.

Sex Linked genes . BCM strain

N3 is the Id . Dermal Melanin Inhibitors . Light foot color .dominant , this gene causes the shanks to turn lighter . has no effect on a true Black chooks feet .
the opposite of this gene is id+ Wild type . absence o dermal Melanin inhibitors .dark shanks.

BCM have the Id gene .
Rooster Id/Id . light grey /slate with a pinkish tones .
BCM hen is Id/- just one copy .her shanks are darker almost no pink at all .

we have to select a BCM cockerels/Roosters with a lighter shanks not dark all the way through .
lighter the shanks of the Sire roo ,better will be the shanks of his daughters .future breeders.
if we don t do that ,we ll end up one day with a dark shank BCM strain . not accepted by the SOP ( original one - French -).

ALL the marans varieties must have this gene Id . Marans must have Pink or pinkish shanks regardless witch variety ,Except the Solid Black E/E .

Sex Linked genes .BCM strain .

N 4 = Brown eye br .
no much is understood about this gene,
this gene get effected ( sensitive to ) by the melanin influencing genes.to give rise to the black eye ..

so breeding from the rooster with a dark eye = big trouble .all the pullets progeny will have dark eyes .
Breeding from a hen with a dark eyes .the cockerels will be affected, but not a pullets if they sire has a well colored eyes .

Marans chooks have this genes as a old recessive trait .never fully bred out of them .
they should not have it any way .

we should breed it out and only breed rom the orange eyes strain .

I said toooooooooooooooo muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
going a catch up with some sleep .

PS next one will be the Feathering gene .Slow .fast etc............all Sex linked

I have question on a 3 1/2 month old cockerel He's beautiful in his design, structure and coloring is really coming in well. His fault is white lobes. I know this is a major fault. My question is, could he be used as a breeder in a limited role and how strongly will he throw this trait? Will his progeny all have this as a recessive even tho they don't have them? TIA
