International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I second that! I probably would have gotten discouraged long ago without Chooks man and this thread. It has been a great privilege learning from him and this thread. :)

I only shared what I know with you marans lover .
this gorgeous breed has faced a lot neglect . I don t like that
I grow up with them .
it is only breed I know from inside out . LEARN FROM MY MOM . it is to me like the language .never forget it . always in the back of my head .

chooks man

PS = there is a great people s in this thread . Bravo to all .
keep sending this lovely photos of your flock .

Thanks for all the advice! I am thrilled with her. She is the only pure LA pullet I raised that is good for the breeding pen. Now hopefully she lays nice dark eggs! I will hatch all the eggs from her I can get. :)

that is sort of madness I like to hear .( I ll hatch all the eggs from her I can get )
Go for it .it is the best strategy to get you out of your nightmare and you ll never regret it guaranty

all the best
Chooks man

So I still have both Chester and Sue. Not easy to get rid of a cockerel! Can I please ask for updated feedback? Previous consensus was to keep Chester. At 17 weeks Sues eyes are no longer dark (went from black to green to mottled now a dark coppery color). Sue carries his tail lower while Chesters is quite upright (I need schooled on tail angles). Chester is in the back of the pic with both of them. The other is just Sue. Thank you for letting me share my marans!

Edit: sue's comb isn't pretty either.

I like the darker cockerel in the forefront of the last picture. He has lovely type and tail angle. This is why we must not cull birds too soon. Give them plenty of time to grow out before making the cull. Some are late bloomers. :)

Yes you have previously said chester had too much color. We love Sue too. He's really pretty to see his color in person. His comb is not so much. Split and it has prongs at the back and goes a bit far to his neck (learned from this thread). Chester has nice flat wattles and no forks off his comb but carries his tail high - what my novice self thinks is too high. Which fault do I work with? We have to get rid of someone. Breeding pens aren't happening until next year. I would have culled Sue (the dark one) and he was almost gone but someone didn't show up. All because of his eyes and the fact that chester looked so great 4 weeks ago. Im learning to be patient like y'all say.

It costs very little to let them mature if you have the room. At this point I like Sue. Is the only pic of Chester the one with him in the background?

@Hensndoes can you get an up close pic of Sue's comb? On second look, he may have carnation comb. Get close up of the comb from the side and back view if you can. If he has carnation comb that may make him a cull. Depending on if you would rather battle carnation comb or high set tails. Carnation comb is a recessive fault that he will pass on to his offspring. High set tails can be balanced out with females with better tail angle.

Chester would put plenty of color on his offspring, especially if your pullets don't have much hackle color. I do love Sue's type and tail angle though, and I love his darker blue plumage. Chester's copper is even and not too light. He will do if you choose you'd rather work with his tail angle vs the headache of recurring carnation comb cropping up.

I zoomed in, it does indeed look like Sue has carnation comb. See how the points fork out of each side of the blade. Better pics would help to see better to make sure though.
