International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

View attachment 1178615 View attachment 1178614 View attachment 1178612 View attachment 1178611 So I still have both Chester and Sue. Not easy to get rid of a cockerel! Can I please ask for updated feedback? Previous consensus was to keep Chester. At 17 weeks Sues eyes are no longer dark (went from black to green to mottled now a dark coppery color). Sue carries his tail lower while Chesters is quite upright (I need schooled on tail angles). Chester is in the back of the pic with both of them. The other is just Sue. Thank you for letting me share my marans!

Edit: sue's comb isn't pretty either.

still too young to be judged!

It is very hard to watch what used to be such a vigorous and strong dog become frail and weak. He is suffering, that is obvious. His cancer and age are taking its toll. We are preparing ourselves to put him down, but it is so hard. :hit

have you noticed that vaccinated dogs usually develop cancer/tumors?

a vet who dared to ask why people get vaccinated only once and dogs every year got beaten and threatened that if he ever asks again about the dogs vaccines they will kill his wife and kids. I vaccinate my dogs once only. and they die of an old age without any cancer/tumor.

what happened to that vet opened my eyes and that is one of the reasons I have been avoiding vaccines. I personally don't take medicines except painkillers and paracetamol (rarely).

They are adorable! I love the single barred look of them better than my auto-sexing OE's. Do you have pics of their eggs when they started laying?

I like your auto-sexing OE's. unusual and rare look. as you might have noticed I like everything unusual and different. marans, araucana, naked necks...

We are so off topic.

I have seen this pic so many times but I am afraid I don't understand the third row. F1 to F1, than what? F2 to F2 and F3 to F3 or F1 to anything later? I would like avocado eggs but have had no luck with olive eggers. no eggs hatched so far.

Thank you! I have several of the sex-link OE pullets and will grow them all out. I will post pics as they reach point of lay. They have an elegant shape like my Legbars with their high proud fan tails, and are very striking looking seeing them next to my other birds. They are different looking that's for sure with their little black crests and mossy copper/black plumage. But I love a barred bird and want to experiment with the barred OE's also. :)

I wondered the same thing. I have heard that breeding OE to OE for too many generations gives you lighter green eggs and the Olive color won't continue to breed true. I would love some clarification too as to which step to take next in my OE project. F1 to F1 or back cross to Marans?

That is very interesting. I have known several people whose older dogs have gotten cancer. It would most certainly be an interesting research study.

Put the eggs in lockdown a day early @RedBanks to give them an extra day to get positioned for hatching. I like to do that with shipped eggs. I won't raise the humidity for another day or two. Only 9 out of the 14 made it to lockdown, but I went ahead and put a few of the others in the hatcher just in case. Only 9 looked as they should when I candled. They are due November 9th.

There were eggs from 3 different hens, so I separated them in the hatcher as best I could tell them apart. I will wingband them and record them as chicks from RedBanks FRF: Antonio x hen A, RedBanks FRF: Antonio x hen B, and RedBanks FRF: Antionio x hen C, along with other information such as egg color and shape, chick down info, etc.

Here they are in the hatcher to show how I use baskets and such to separate chicks in the hatcher. I bought the little baskets at Dollar General for like a $1 and they are just the right size to fit inside the hatcher. I used a piece of cardboard and zipties to further partition off the basket on the right. I use paper towels to line the baskets to absorb the moisture from the eggs/chicks during hatching and give the chicks traction to prevent splayed legs. :)
