Its hard to believe #12 is the biggest. I would have sworn she was the smallest.

Thank you! Zanitta it is! I love the name! :D

So she would be best suited for Apollo then, yes? If so, I can get them in a pen together as soon as I shuffle a few around.

Zamaya BCM pullet 10 month and 2 weeks old now .
Sire = Zambezi
Dam = Soumaya Black hen.

marans hens should have a wide bottom and lower to the ground , sign of productivity of super large egg 70/75g

They're gorgeous! Zambezi sure gets around! lol :lol:

Their tail angles and type are just superb!

I've been thinking and I find myself in a dilemma. I love the look of the actual true French Marans tails, the way they originally were bred to look. But Americans have decided they like a big but short, full (fanned) type tail as they believe it improves production. They believe a big wide tail makes the bird wider, and a narrow more pointed tail makes the bird narrow and "lacking in the rear end." None of my girls look narrow, even the ones with more pointed tails. Mass egg production is not what Marans are built and bred for, they are bred for the quality of their dark chocolate/russet eggs, not the mass numbers of eggs they produce.

My dilemma is: I prefer the look of the true French Marans tail, but in order to show in the US I must conform to their version of the standard which calls for a full tail. Maybe they wouldn't knock off many points for the lack of a "full" tail in a show. :hmm

I just read about the flooding in Greece. Stay safe over there!

thanks, I am safe. my house is near the sea and my plot is about 1 meter higher than the neighboring plots so I will always be safe. the flooding is very near me, on the mainland in front of my island (5 min with ferry boat). luckily I work from home.

you are alright .
if you want to show ,you should breed to the US SOP .

what they are saying about the open fan tail .verses the thin pointed tail is not sense .they did not breed the marans .So how come the marans hen was doing very well as far as production as a farm hen before this guys got they hand on them and they think they breed them better than the French .
I ll never listen to them or to any body who try to tell me they know about the marans better than my friend in France breeders for over 30 to 40 years Plus my own mom was breeding the marans chooks before they where born .

Both standard require a large based short tail . this is the part related to the back and the the production trail NOT how the tail end .pointed /fan tail/ open / square does not matter ,
it is the base of the tail what matter .

you can keep both trait in your line ,does work ,you ll have split progeny all the type . one for the show and one for the originality of the breed ,other wise you ll never experience a full beauty of true marans chooks look.
rustic ,refine and sleek like the Ferrari car .Elegant chooks not like the other breed of chooks .

PS = like I said many time before I m not here to tell peoples what to do or what to breed .
I m here just to talk about the true marans Original SOP and how can we achieve that .

any country has the right to have they own SOP . that is well understood .BUT any chooks breed has the right to retain they originality as well .for sure.

@kfelton0002

this comb still need a little work at the front .
she has more than 5 point required by the US SOP . some judge will argue that the front point is double .it is small but is there .for the show not the breeding pen .
she is fine in the comb breeding pen for sure .
wanted to high light as you are going to show one day in the future in US .so refine they standard .

my ladies in black look like zamaya!

unfortunately due to many mosquitoes here I have fowl pox in my flock. I treat my chickens with black pepper, works great and my chickens seem to be fine. but I think they lost some weight before I found out they have fowl pox. they are gaining it again but I bet without pox they would have been heavier.

let's hope that next year I will be in better location.
