International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

yes this is what I meant by it's subjective. It's their interpretation of the standard. you will also run into people that feel the same way that chooks man does. and dogs people follow a judge that they know likes their kind of say Labrador. give five different judges the same set of birds and they may all have a different opinion. do what you think is right and wait for people to catch up with you

Absolutely. I like the look of a slightly pointed tail. And as I look at pictures of winners of ribbons in shows on that FB group, most winners have french looking tails. Full at the base but held together and more the pointed type.

I hope this made sense I'm using my cell phone. It's not always the best when I talk text

If it were white in the wings or white ticking on the breast, I would tell you it will hopefully molt out. But my experience with white underfluff has been that if its there when thd bird is younger, likely it will stay. My experience has been limited though, mind you as I am fairly new to Marans myself. My original LA cock bird had white underfluff under his hackle when he was young and it didnt molt out. Parasitic white is pretty common in many lines of BCM. If the white underfluff remains, pair him with females with pure black underfluff to help balance it out. I have a couple males with white fluff now that I will still be using. It can be corrected like anything else with good balance in the breeding pen.

When you produce more birds and have the luxury to pick and choose through many, you can cull hard for parasitic white. That is my plan. :)
I’ve got that one and it’s from hens I don’t have anymore. They were mainly black, no copper but laid a nice dark egg compared to some of my others. At this point he’s got more of the mahogany hackle and saddle is just starting to come in.

Is he the only male you have? Mahogany males can be worked with if he has other good qualities, but he will need a very well coppered female to help balance out his mahogany. It's good he came from a dark egg, that's a plus. Give him plenty of time to grow and color up. Some Marans cockerels are ugly ducklings for a while and it takes forever for them to show their full potential.

My original LA cock bird had lots of white underfluff, so that isn't necessarily a deal breaker unless you have plenty of birds to choose from.

View attachment 1189018 One of my pullets has regularly been laying these eggs with the colour not evenly dispersed. The pointy end is still about a #5 but the rounded end is much darker

Those eggs are amazing! Hang onto the pullets that laid those for dear life and breed them wisely, making sure not to lose those precious genes! Absolutely gorgeous! Well done!

love to see Maximus photos .
how he is looking now ?

He is looking good and happy in his new pens as we move him back and forth. So far the pullets only lay very sporadically due to the cooler weather and shorter days so I probably won't be setting any eggs from him for a while. No rush though. He is covering Queen, Lucille, and #8. :)
