Have you ever injured one? Now I am worried! What if I hurt them?
I didnt mean to make you nervous. Just be careful and have someone help you hold the birds until you get the hang of it. I actually have injured one yes, a little day old chick I hatched back in the fall. I didnt go back far enough and as I pushed the wing band in it pulled the web cord in two and severed it. I banded the other wing instead and watched the chick as she grew. Luckily she was okay, I think because she was young the injury healed and the wing was fine. She's one of my current grow outs free ranging now unless she is the one our GP pup killed. Pups are a chore to train but he is doing better.
However, a cockerel grow out my hubby wing banded back in the summer ended up having a complication with his wing causing it to droop and drag. My hubby has wing banded hundreds of chickens without a problem. The wing band didnt seem to be incorrectly placed but something was injured causing lameness in the wing, possibly a nerve. After a few days it didnt resolve so we culled the cockerel. Complications are pretty rare with proper technique so just watch some youtube videos and relax. Let me know if I can do anything else to help.
