International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

@marchick,

Good question, his crop does empty every night. He drinks regularly and I have seen him eat but I’m fairly sure he is not eating as much as he would if feeling well.

Take Care,
Keith

sorry to hear about Otis .
as long as he is eating and drinking there is always a chance of recovery .
a problem get worst when they stop eating and they shut down .

Thanks...... I am reading about Mareks. Let's pray it isn't that.

my pullet is still alive. not better neither worse. she still has something in her crop. it is bigger than corn. when I checked her 3 days ago I think she didn't have anything that big. the rest of grains have been digested. as I yesterday left her outside for a while to enjoy sunshine she might have swallowed a big stone or an olive stone as she was under an olive tree. the first day of her sickness she ate egg only. yesterday she did not want anything but layers mesh. today she ate a few raw olives (pitted by myself first) and sesame seeds. she pecked some mesh and just tasted an egg. she drinks medicated water.

waiting will make me sick.

cooked worm rice will help her if she is not eating much . rice will give her energy .
hope she get better .

Otis continues to show improvement. He’s vocalizing and acting like a normal rooster again. He even gave me a little wing dance this morning so I know he’s feeling better. I’m not ready to declare him 100% cured but I’m feeling a lot better it. He’s almost 2 years old and this was his first time to be sick. I’m fairly certain he had gapeworms which was probably carried in by wild birds.

My breeding plan for this Spring hinged heavily on Otis as I want to breed him to my 5 darkest layers (#6-7) in hopes of getting some really nice cockerels and pullets. If these parings workout hopefully I can start line breeding next year.

Keith

nice to hear .Otis is doing fine .

love your breeding plan for this year. good luck

@RedBanks
Class .that all what I can say .

your girls are making you proud .breed them well .

@RedBanks
sorry to hear about your pullet .

the man who told you .chicken die s ,he was not laying .

can be from inbreeding too .maybe Antonio and one the pullet are true sibling?

can be genetic too .

mortality of the chicks under 3 months cane be caused by chicks hatching after day 21( day22/23/24)
mortality of the chicks over 3 to POL can be caused by chicks hatching before day 21.

there is many factors causes the chicks to die .
we have to do our best to breed them healthy /strong and resistant .

I bought my first chicks from a man that lives about 1 hour away. One died shortly after I got home. I called the man because I thought he needed to know there was something wrong with the chicks. He assured me that there was nothing wrong with the chicks or his chickens. He said, "Chickens die." It was one of the best things anyone has ever said to me. Chickens do die..... predators, disease and freak accidents. It isn't anything I have done wrong (I hope) and they are difficult to save. I hate the loss of any living thing but I am very glad for that man's blunt words, it made me understand I needed to be pragmatic when dealing with sick chickens. Now having said that I just pray the rest will be okay!:fl

Agree with a man 100%

So if it is Mareks are they all going to get this ill?

Mareks and coccidioses can appears from no where because the chooks carries the bacteria within them selves .they have to build resistance to it that all . specially when just hatched .
some study has shown ,if the chicks is not vaccinated in the first hour of they hatch .than it is too late .all ready have contracted mareks .

there is many strain out there ,some are more fatal than others .

Genetic is the only way to breed all this chooks sickness out .

there is few Universities in the US have a mareks free chooks lines .bred long ago and kept pure and safe .
there is many free disease chooks line out there .kept away by they breeders ..

I agree.... I think all this bio security stuff might be turn out to be very bad in the long run. I also think if we allowed the hens to hatch/raise the chicks it would strengthen the birds.
