International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hello,

I'm new to BCM. I got have 4 four week olds and will be getting 10 more straight run chicks soon. At what age will I be able to start to tell pullets from cockerels? What are some of the characteristics to look for? I'm sure this has been asked before so sorry for the repeat!

Hi and welcome! Chances are your 4 week olds can be sexed now. Post good pics that show them standing on their own in natural light from the side and head on and you will certainly get some great feedback. A few folks here are pretty keen on chicks too. If you start 5 or so pages back (around April 26th) you will see my posts with my chicks and gain some knowledge from the feedback I got to help you

welcome!

usually at 6-8 weeks you can see differences. sometimes cockerels have big combs and red wattles at 8+ days.

Welcome to BCM and this thread. I call my place Hinterland also. Upright stance, in my line cockerels are slow feathering, the comb, in Kfelton0002 line the pullets have black combs (probably mine too but I never paid attention). If I can really see a comb on day one, I am betting cockerel. Cockerels are usually your favorite! Post pictures we will struggle over it with you!

3 of my cockerels are going to the swap this morning. One has a coronation comb, one has a saw tooth comb and a high tail, and the third has awkward ones that turn in. That will leave me 3 boys left to choose from. One is a bit over colored and one has a little bit of a weird comb but all 3 seem to have a good stance and good tail angle.

I have six leaving in a few days. I wish there was a swap close by. I will post pics of each one and why they went, never thought about it before your post but it would be helpful to me and maybe to the thread. I have one cockerel that I really like and the second I am keeping for his copper and very orange eye.
