International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Put mine on the ground this weekend. 13 total, 4 BCM cockerels, 7 pullets :woot, 1 pullet cross and 1 cross cockerel. I’ll get more pics as time allows.

PS. @kfelton0002 The one with the red spot on its head as a chick turned out to be a pullet.

I see some chest leakage on one of the cockerels, he is probably from the line B. My line B cockerels are growing out with quite a bit of chest leakage too and lighter copper in the hackles than I like.

The pullets are looking good! Glad you got 7 girls, thats great! Out of the 4 cockerels if you dont end up with a nice one to use I will probably have one extra I can send later on in the year. I have quite a few cockerel grow outs ranging in age from a couple weeks old on up to 5-6+ months old. The shipping on older birds is a little pricey but we can cross that bridge when we get there.

Since two of your cockerels from me have inverted combs I probably wouldnt use them unless they are spectacular otherwise as it likely is genetic. A breeder friend of mine says he culls any with inverted combs when I asked him about them. I still haven't had one with an inverted comb yet so I have no experience with them until seeing yours. Post pictures of the inverted combs if you get time so everyone can see what they look like.

Marans are like a box of chocolates.. you never know what you're going to get! :)

How much copper should hens have?...The Marans of American Club shows hens with copper,, sparse... at the sides of the head and at tye very back of the neck . Then, I see pictures of people' s birds... They "breed to the sop" , but the copper is so abundant on the hackle, the bird almost looks like a black sex-link

Breeding to the SOP and actually meeting the SOP are two totally different things.

But i belive both are accepted as long as the copper is the correct color.

That question got me thinking as to what the goal is. From the marans club page:

"Hen : Black with red hackle markings but without the typical Birchen breast lacing. Very slight red breast marking is acceptable. Green sheen is not required"

So this tells me there isn't a specific amount as long as it doesn't fall out of the parameters. I like hens with a nice amount in their hackles but that's just a personal preference on looks. I'm hoping one of my pullets turns out sparser because my blue roo is over colored. I guess I'm also hoping that's how it works...
