Sorry I havent been around much. My grandmother has been sick again so Ive been having to take her back and forth for imaging studies and appointments. Her cancer had been in remission but now she has what appears to be a seeminly unrelated mass in her sinuses that is causing problems and will need surgery and possibly chemo again. Sorry I haven't been as active on the forum. She raised me from an infant so I've been having a hard time.

sorry to hear. Hopefully it will be as easy of a process for her as possible. It is nice to hear she has you to keep her spirits up while she deals.

I have quite a few cockerels growing out. I will let you know if I have one I can send you in the fall.

If your cock bird has too many hens to service he may not be able to keep up with all of them. Try single, trio, or quad mating him with select hens in a smaller pen for a while. Fertility may be better if he didnt have so many hens to keep bred.

He has 9 and he is tearing the snot out of 7 of them. The only 2 he doesn’t touch are the older hens that don’t accept his advances. The other 7 (and 4 more that he gets free time with once a week to keep the flocks from fully separating) look TERRIBLE. Like he has no grace. Just wrecks them. He’s on them all day. Gets up on their backs and it’s like he’s doing the hammer dance for 3 min straight. I don’t think the ladies like him enough to let him make contact. This weekend he’s going to be donated to a rehab center and be made birdfood. They gas them first then process them.

What kind of rehab center? Wildlife? Interesting. I’d prefer this for some of my cockerels that I’d prefer don’t meet awful fates off Craigslist.

VINS Nature Center = vermont institute of natural science. They rehab injured birds to either be released back into the wild or live out in their nature center if release isn’t an option. These organizations try to keep their residents as close as possible to their natural world. But their food has to be processed. No one would respond well if they turned live animals loose for hunting. They really appreciate the unwanted birds being donated long as they aren’t diseased or parasite ridden. And I get a free ticket to the park. They have a mates pair of bald eagles that can’t be released. Last I was there the pair was trying to hatch an egg. I asked them about it and was told they can’t let them hatch and would have to remove the egg. Regulations.

Yeah sounds like the best solution. I will let you know in the fall if I have a nice one I can send you. I dont want to count my chickens before they hatch, grow out, and survive the cull. Lol
