International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I am down 9 roosters and 1 pullet. I sold the splash cockerel and pullet. I kept the original Birchen, original Blue Copper roosters. Of course I kept the BCM AND BLCM cockerels. I only kept the original Blue Copper rooster incase something happened to one of my cockerels. He will probably stay in my layer grow/out pen.

Thats awesome! As soon as I get a free day I'll be culling a few myself.

I ll tell you what they produce =
correct body type
correct mass
correct head
correct eyes
correct tail shape and angle .
correct legs
correct plumage type and colour
correct stand .
correct copper type

Perfect X Prince = correct comb
Perfect X SW = correct and complete body pattern .

Faults you need to watch for .
shoulder pattern on both progeny ,has to be complete and early too
Combs and wing from SW progeny .

you see my friend I do not see any thing bad will come out of those 3 chooks .for sure will be some culling but will be more gorgeous and correct chooks meet the SOP.

chooks man

Sounds like a good plan to me. I want to minimize what birds I use as breeders and use only the best few to help minimize culls. I appreciate all your advice. I am feeling much better about everything now. :)

Day Walker .Blue Tail Buff .best cockerel in the farm .he is almost complete ,few issue here and there but nothing alarming .no DQ
here now I m working with him = this method is selective pen breeding with back crossing to the suprime Sire Day Walker
Step 1 = matted him to my best 8 hens .all have a proper body type and a proper egg shape OVAL and dark colour #5/#7 . they all have they strongest points and a weakest one too .but they complete each other ,no 2 hens carries a same fault or share a same fault with Day Walker .
i ll hatch 10 chicks or more from each hen .my first hatch will be today .
select the best pullets .each hen should be replaced with her best daughter. mate those selected pullets to they sire DW and produce pullets from each hen .
I ll keep doing this back crossing tell I get 100% Red Marans .line bred strain .

I ll be culling for any deffect .only the best of the best will breed . taking no chances .
chooks man

there is many ways to breed a chooks . not just mother s x son .father x daughters . or just out crossing

He is so cool looking! That is a lovely variety! I would love to add more varieties but I want to focus on bettering the BCMs I have before I bring in more work.

I know I am terrible at remembering names but I am trying hard to remember. I looked up my original BLC rooster. His name was Jasper. The hen we think is mom to the 2 good BLC pullets. Her name is pearl. I still need names for the two BC pullets. Ones I can remember! Lol

How about Fauna and Flora? I like naming hens/pullets old lady names. Lol
Kayla, I will never remember those names. I love flowers though so how about Rose for my best BC pullet. She now has the orange leg band. Lily for the other BC pullet. She has black and a white leg band. Ruby for my best BLC pullet she had pink band and now has pink and Blue leg bands. Jade for the other BLC pullet she has yellow leg band. They are my breeder pullets for next year. Ruby and Jade's mother is Pearl she has a red leg band. I will also be breeding Pearl next year and possibly one other BLC pullet depending on how she turns out.

I worked last night putting leg bands on my Coppers. I am planning my pens out and logging it all. Here soon I will be shuffling pens around. I am going to put the Birchen/ Blue Birchen that are 100% not keepers in a separate section. Maybe rehome them. I would like to get down to about 25 for winter. So 8 more can go but not worried if they dont. I am two turkeys down. Sold a pair today. They where only wanting them for pets. I plan on the large pen for layers and grow outs. I give out free eggs and everyone wants eggs. They can have them from my laying pen. Not my Copper pens! Sorry for rambling! Lol

I wish my birds were laying better. The molt and the weather change has slowed most of them way down. I wish I could cull down to 25! We have way too many chickens. lol
