International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

He is one of the oldest cockerels. I think he has had more time to color up than the others. His tail is 90 degrees right now. It may get higher as he matures more.

some time you have to have to work with one fault to keep the good trait in that bird going tell be replaced .
it is a good thing about line breeding ,you will have like I said before 3 different progeny .as long as they have a coplete traits between then than it Ok .the fault can be bred out .but if you loose the body pattern you ll never get it back .they are called Black copper .never folget that . it is a major trait ,the trait they where bred for .as long as you keep it is fine .when time come you can use it .

hatch from #3 15 chicks ,put him a side and wait to see how they come out .than decide .

LOL I do hate that I will have to say goodbye to SW. He is a well-behaved cockerel and is lovely to look at (aside from the SW). I will have to walk away when hubby does the deed. Such is life raising chickens. I am glad brown eyes gets to stay though. :)
stick to your breeding program .other wise you end up with just chicken ,not what you want /

SW .you still have his Dam .she will throw a better cockerel if she well muched .

I ll put my money on Malika and Perfect .any time all time .they are umached .so the cockerels are selected to complete them not to take any from them .

that how I see it . who is going to produce better progeny not who is looking better ,it is not a show ,it is a breeding pen ,and they have to do a specific job .what they where selected for. not just producing chicks ,any cockerel can do that ,but they do feed them we feed them .we select who is staying and who is going .

I can keep the high tailed cockerel to raise a few chicks from. I just know that the male seems to play a big part in the tail angles of the offspring and I dont want to lose progress. Color is also very important too though so the high tailed cockerel may have something to offer that the others cant. I hope I end up with a better cockerel that has good complete color and good tail angle out of my bunch.

Sounds great! Selecting down to the highest quality single mated pairs is exactly what I need to do to simplify hatching, marking, and culling. I will work on getting them moved to where they need to go in the next few months once breeding season begins again. :)

Didn't you also say you have other free ranging cockerels that you where not able to get pictures. Maybe there is another one out there that you will like better then 3. Maybe try and get pictures of the rest.

cockerel #3 I m still not sure tell I see the photos .how high is his tail ?

one more year and you will have your coclourfull cockerels from Perfect , she is your way out of the dark and slow colouring cockerels .
it is a reason I m worring too much about Malika s future dark progeny . Perfect progeny will balance that out .
is all about balancing the breeding program .

High tail is Autossomal .both roosters and hens put they own share in the crime .

your future coloured cockerel will come out of Perfect , she will throw 100% colourfull cockerels if matted to #1 and #4 .

so you don t really need cockerel#3 . we can work with 2 cockerels #1 and #4 plus Malika s and Perfect . 4 different progeny .work well .

When do you start hatching? Do you keep the roosters separate? I worry what the 2- 3 hens will look like in with the roosters but I don't have room to separate them. I may make saddles for them to protect their backs from being bald. I may put more hens with them till I am ready to hatch then kick them into the big pen. My two BC pullets are probably about 4 months now. I won't be able to hatch from them till march.

Yeah there is one or two out there I couldnt get a good picture of. I will try to get pictures on my days off from work.
