International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I definitely dont want to lose the proper coloring, for sure. I'll work with high tail and find a nice lower tailed female to balance him out. I would like to take some nicely colored birds to show next year. :)

Duchess may serve that purpose but her hackle coloring is dark and sparse.

ah Duchess ,be very carfull with this hen ,she is Duke s line .so she may be a carrier of split hackle marking .
I will test her with Dark Angel and High Tail {name him Vortex }.both of there copper is uniform . and see what progeny look like .2 type to select from .
NEVER mate her to Duke s or any cockerel with split hackle marking .

I will post pics ASAP. I know I have Perfect, and 2 out of the 3 show pullets I may use (with the exception of the brown eyed one). Then there is Duchess (Duke's sister) I could use.
Xena is retired and free ranging. She has a high tail and is frequently broody so I threw her out back in the summer. There are several other pullets free ranging that are potentials but are a bit too young yet to tell. Once the pullets begin laying I can tell more about their true tail angle.

if Xina s was a cockerel#1 Dam than she shouldn be retired . you have to dig deep and find out who is cockerel#1 mom before you start eliminating your breeders . bad move .
high tail and goes broody ,that her fault what are her qualities and what did she passed to her progeny . you can tell by looking @ her progeny see how she did .

working with a proven breders is easier than new ones .because the old ones are tested ,we know what they throw and how to fix it .

for us new /old /different blood is not important .what important to us at this stage of breeding is a good traits and bad fault .who is a carriers .
we are forming our chooks line ,so we don t have to keep any body line going ,is they line not ours .
we are working to create ours .so mixing a blood line is not bad for a moment as long as the chooks have a quality we are looking for .

all the chooks and fetile eggs I bought this year will be mixed up to create my future line .every thing goes at this stage .outcross .brother sisters . mother son . cousin every thing is allowed tell I start see a good chooks coming out of my hatch than I start forming famillies , it is too early to form any thing just importing the good and exporting the bad .

here a example of great pair .if put together will be stunnig .not going to happen ,just showing you what a foudation chooks look like to create line from them without adding any thing .
your hen Malika
and Marchicks BLC cockerel Nimbus .
if this pair are mated than greatness will be born . foudation pair . pair of Excellence .

If only she lived closer. I could make weekly trips to her house to have Malika bred by her cockerel. Lol

Regarding adding new blood, I just meant I didnt want to add any more new problems by adding anymore unrelated birds (unless I have to in tje future). Marchick has the same blood that Duke is from so using birds from her wouldn't be adding anything new, just enhancing the blood I already have.

working with they progeny is a same thing . Nimbus son if he is of a same quality will do a job too .
you can start preparing for this future line of yours .Mlalika s line .breed her to Dark Angel and Vortex . select the best 2/4 pullets . those pullets will be mated to Nimbus son .

Xena is well colored, so she very well could have produced the high tailed cockerel. It is difficult to speculate though. She was annoying to try to use as a breeder because she would lay an egg or two and go right back broody. She would clog up the nest box and the birds would bust eggs squabbling over the nest. I just got frustrated with her and turned her out to free range. I think I have better quality females to work with this year with better tail angles. I dont want to produce a high volume of high tailed birds like in the past. Using the high tailed cockerel is plenty for me. I would prefer to keep high tails behind me if possible.

Sounds like a great plan. I look forward to working with marchick's birds in the future. :)

Here is one of my prospective breeder pullets. She is still maturing so hopefully her tail stay low. The pics are of the same pullet, she just didnt feel like posing at the show. Her earlobes are a blueish color and that is her only fault that annoys me.

Here is Perfect. These pictures are a month old and she is still in the process of maturing so her tail angle certainly is subject to change. I will get more recent pics on my days off.
