International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here is another pullet I caught up to watch. She is 6 months old and had good hatch down as a chick according to my records. She has no white in her plumage. She is wide the entire length of her back to the tail, nice open tail. Clear eye color, okay hackle color, good mass and type, and her comb looks good.

she is very very nice .there is not one thing I do like about . great conformation .
watch a tail ,we want them bushy ,short and this not open ,do not select for openness will create you trouble is a future .
pullets/hens tail should be short ,full at base. closed and thin at the the top. giving it the pyramid shape when looked from the rear.

she has a correct tail full, short and thin at the top .I don t see it open .

she is conformation breeder . love her thick head ,she has Prince head .

I forgot to mention that the pullet I just posted is on the small side, so I will have to weigh her to see if she meets the weight requirement. I surely don't want to perpetuate small birds.

that is a good point .mass is very important.
but I have to say she has a correct conformation .well put together .

Since her tail is fuller, I figured she might pair well with Dark Halo since his tail seems to be too narrow. At this point, I am merely brainstorming. I don't want fanned tails, but I would like for his offspring to have fuller tails than he has. What are your thoughts on that?

she is gorgeous .very long with correct tail . love her hackle marking . she is body pattern breeder . all her cockerel progeny will be colourfull with a full shoulder marking

you have very nice young stock .so take your time and select well .you don t need a 100 pullets to breed a good line but you need high quality ones ,even if only few . you have more than few ,so breath and relax .let them mature and do no let any cockerels penned with them .let them grow nicely free from any stress .

there is a difference between rooster/cockerels tails and pullets/hens tail .
the SOP call for the rooster to have a full ,thick @Base ,short tail
pullets/hen they should have .full @Base ,small and thin

you breeding to show in the US ,than breed what they call for to be safe .

Thank you! I'm not in any hurry to breed them. I am going to let them reach POL before I select breeders out of the pullets. I am penning up my best pullets right now because there has been a brown dog running around and I fear losing birds. The pullets and my brood hens are separate from the cockerels and will stay that way all winter.

So far I have 5 pullets penned to keep an eye on. I'll pick the best out closer to spring to use as breeders.

great job .you will see in the spring ,they will look different bird .young and fit .
a lot people do a mistake on keeping the pullets with cockerels after 4 months of age .bad news for a pullets .they never reach they full potential .
