I find my bcm hatch better with humidity around 30ish. This last hatch was a disaster. I couldnt get the humidity lower than 45% and a lot died at lockdown. When i opened them, they were very wet.

Thank you both for your input. I've let it drop now to 35%. That's pretty much dry hatching for me. Any hints to drop it more? I have a small bowl of rice in there to help absorb moisture. My last hatch, out of 18 Marans, six went to lockdown, three looked promising and only one hatched. The other two that looked promising I opened up and they were both dead in shell but fully developed so I suspect they may have drowned. I don't want ta repeat... thus my nervousness.

I hope you have a good hatch. You want that aircell to grow. You want them to have a big enough aircell. When they break into the aircell they will have enough air in egg till they get enough energy to make a hole in shell. Hope that going down to 35% will make the aircell bigger. Maybe others might have some ideas and will chime in. If you hold at about 35% dry hatching. That is what I would do in future hatches.

is it humid where you live? I live in a dry climate so 45-50/60% is ok here.

Only a 2 percent loss in weight in the biggest egg so I would think the humidity is too high.

At this time of the year it is humid. Only through Sept then it starts to dry up as we get closer to our fall/winter season.

spot on .marans eggs do better with dry incubation 30/40% during both stages ;incubation and lock down .
a secret is to keep the same temperature and humidity when moving eggs to the hatcher . lot people increase the humidity in the hatcher .wrong with marans eggs . humidity should be kept a same .

yes 35% average .dry hatching is a best for marans eggs .other thing is to keep the humidity down when they start hatching by opening all the vent holes .because when the first eggs start hatching the humidity will rise in the hatcher .{ that what kill the chicks in the eggs }.so keeping it low is very hard and important .

you hatching many different breeds . room humidity doesn t matter ,is the bator/hatcher humidity what important .
marans like a dry incubation . because if the humidity in the hatcher is higher than 50% ,what happen when the first few eggs hatch .the humidity will goes sky high and will kill the chicks ready to hatch .
marans eggs shape OVAL plus the color coating plus a large size 70/80g make them harder to hatch at high humidity .

agree with you my friend .humidity should be lower than 40% inside the incubator and the hatcher .
