International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thanks Chooksman - great information! I’ll wait to see what color eggs the pullets lay. I have four all black pullets - 2 have good type, eyes and tails, 1 has long legs and a high tail and the last one has good type but is small for a Marans.

all the best ,hope they lay dark eggs for you .

I am wondering why he did not send any profile pictures with clear sight of their combs, wattles, ear lobes and eye colours etc.

when she pick up the eggs ,she can have a good look at the breeders stock .
at least this person was honest and send photos of they flock .I have seem peoples who sale fertile eggs post photos of the best marans they can find in the net .

This left one has become the proper shape. The pullet laying the one on the right was a sister (identical parents) to the one laying the correct egg colour and shape.

So, genetics can play quite a trick on you.

genes do no get inherited a same way .other wise all the racehorses will be winner and marans chooks will lay dark eggs .

line breeding for a long duration will help to keep only the best genes and breed out the faults .
egg on left is stunning ,true marans shape the SOP call for .and the old marans strain where famous of producing .

love your work ,

Every so often a breeder is successful and the offspring lays very dark and nicely rounded eggs with a beautiful shimmer like these:

some breeders work very hard and very efficient . they get rewarded in the end if they last long .
marans eggs are the best in the chooks world . no other breed can match them .

I had a second look at this cockerel . he has a gorgeous body conformation , every thing is well placed .
gorgeous head .eyes .comb { lobe is forked ,not a big deal } great small size , good shape too .nice small well rounded wattles .
long solid well arched { where the neck meet the head}
well stretch body type .great stand . back nicely tilted .
lovely small and full tail at the right angle .
well balance front and back .lovely chest and lovely rear .
good feet .nicely colored and feathered .
complete body pattern .

only problem he has is his copper is not uniform and not rich color . good to breed him to the Black pullets and keep only the solid black progeny .they will be stunning for sure .
I like him better than the other one big comb and tail for breeding solid black progeny . no need to worry about the lighter hackle ,will be bred out .
looking at the photos of the black cockerel ,brother to your black pullets . I think this guy will complement the pullets better . because his head is better and his posture is better .his stand is better not too high in the front . his body is well balanced in the middle .legs not too far back .

I think he is true brother to your best cockerel . haven t got the names yet . they have a similar body type and stand .

when he is fully mature ,he will turn into massive gorgeous rooster .

my first Red Pyle marans breeding group .line breeding , first I m going to test to see witch cockerel will produce the best progeny . I have 3 cockerel .
first pairing is the son Enkido {son of Enki } over his dam Unicorn and his 2 half sisters sired by Day Walker . line breeding .
the body pattern is not correct yet in the cockerels except Elvis has a proper one .
photos of Enkido and 3 hens . they are getting used to each other , not let out yet out of they pen .

the first time in my life I saw this variety I was 14 years old . went to visit a new friend about 50 km from my parent village in Spain . went I got there he took me to see what his mother has in the back yard . and there was a pen of 14 hens and 2 roosters all Red Pyle big marans .I was impressed , I told his mother that my mom has red marans and she will like some fertile eggs from this flock if possible .she said I will give you some thing better to take to your mother tomorrow . next day when I was leaving she gave me a cage with one of the 2 roosters in it .the big one . he was heavy . she said tell your mother to breed him to her red marans and give him back to me next year . that is my story with RP marans .very close to my heart . lot memory of my younger days .

sorry guys too much bla bla.............

Sheesh. I wish i could do that many.
I only have 9 pullets to choose from.

6 if i take the line #1 pullets out of the flock.
Keep in mind chicken taste good🤣. Also I sell chicks and Pullets. I keep the ones I like and sell the rest. I think I sold a couple roosters I should have kept this fall but the fun part is I can hatch more.

Too much bla bla is good.
Nice story!

you only need one excellent hen to build your line . quality or quantity my friend .

I have only 5 hens { 3 over 2 years old and 2 are13 months old . I think I have more than what I need .
I have many roosters to mate them too and create many many lines .

chooks man

There are a few really nice looking pullets in this line #2 with full copper hackles, nice mass and type.

To my novice eye, only one of them i will not use. She is too small. But there is time to see how they mature more.
