International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

He developed a large growth on his neck so I eventually culled him.

I started with 3 lines.
I still have hens from lines #2 and #3.
No Marans from line #1 but I have their progeny.

All were bred to a line #3 rooster.
Seamus.
He had a lot of parasitic white but a low, short tail, beautiful copper, light colored legs, light leg feathering, and he was big and chunky.

I did what I thought you would advise me.
Breed from him then get rid of him because I was breeding in parasitic white but I needed the other qualities he had.

I did not want to breed his progeny back to him because the white would be reinforced and even harder to breed out..

This has produced much nicer marans.
Did I do the right thing?
you have done what I will do my self .never cross back to bird showing very bd fault or desqulifiction traits .
so you still have progeny from line #1 mix in to your existing line ,that very smart move .
I never keep other peoples lines pure in my farm ,I blend them to other lines and I work with the blend so I can breed in or beed out any trait I need
when we have with prsitic white bck excel in other desirble trit ,we shold beed from him and remove only when we hve some good qulity progeny from him like you hve done with Seamus. now you have mny cockerels and pullets to work with to breed the parsitic white out and keep the good traits in
my self now I ended up with super nice ( the best in the farm ) BC cockerels from Gaelle line 5 of them but they ll hve parsitic white I can not cll them all wrong practice , but I have to keep the 2 best one and work with them I need to find the mgic pairing to over come that
I know Love song and here progeny 2 cockerels and 1pullet do no carry the parsitic white so I ll mix the lines together I pair love song with CTB again to produce more progeny , I ll mate her dughter to the Gazelle best son Spring Buck and I ll mte Gazelle dughter to LoveSong son OperaHouse , by doing this pairing I ll produce 2 different type of progeny one the will be the parasitic white carrier ,the other will be free from it lot work .,we have to work with what we have ,we cn not cull all our birds ,

I am doing what you would do by reading and taking notes from this thread!

I would have never gotten this far without it. There is so much information here. :)

So the only cockerels/roosters I have are the 4 that are showing no white yet and that 1 squirrel tailed one that I need to butcher.

I started out with 12 boys I hatched early spring.
All Seamus progeny, using hens from lines 1,2 and 3
I culled the ones that showed white early. Now to let these guys molt and see what I have to work with.

I am sure my neighbors are not happy. Its very loud around here at 4am.

You have done well with those cockerels @Chooks man. They are stunning.

BC cockerel son of CTB over Amor , I have 2 brothers identical . Both are overly black no much colour on they shoulder and back . They have a black lancet and they hackle is so dark and not complete. They will be used over the solid black pullers BlackManba daughters . I like this guy a lot correct body type Lovely tail , no white so far great stance . He is big solid and gentle too . Lovely head. He will much well with a black pullers . They are massive with great tails and lovely head and comb but they do carry the parasitic white for sure . I still have they mother my original solid black hen Ravendale . Chooks man

I have over 70 roosters , cockerels . No body is happy about except me . Your 4 cockerels are stunning . It is a good sign when they don t show the white early . That mean they have a minimum or none . After the big molt @ 2 years you can tell it they have or not . You need to work with different pairing , small number of hens with each cock , so you end up with a lot different progeny to select from . That what I m trying to do . It is easier to work with a large pen but you end up with a lot similarity. We need variation so we can tell what pairing work and what doesn’t t work . All the best . Photos of the hens please. This is Amor second son , he has more colour than the first one. But still he has black shoulder . That is enough for me to breed him to. Black hens . This guy like to fight . His comb is smashed . Love his long back and correct small tail . Very important to me . Haven got a name for him or his brother yet . Chooks man
Some people will say , he has. Black shoulder because he has extra melanin or Melinise like they say . That is not true he is E/ER he is a hybrid between. Solid black and BC . How I know that , his feet are pinkish coloured not dark at all . If he had extra melanin than his feets will be darker . Just some extra information that all . Chooks man

Blue silver/ golden dark cuckoo, Shameock#2 son he look like his sire . They are identical . He is huge like his sire with extra large comb. I have 7 brothers 2 blue cuckoo look a like , 1 black cyckoo different style smaller with a bad comb , 3 splash all big bird with a large comb and one blue F1 birchen I posted photo of him last week. Shamrock and CTB produced large birds All over 11 pound . Fast grower too good to develop meaty line from them . Chooks man

I see what you mean. Pink in the legs. This is good information to remember between being overmelinized or E/ER.
