there is a lot peoples sending email asking about the difference between inbreeding and line breeding .I want to talk about that a little today .
inbreeding is what most peoples use to breed they chooks ,there is good thing about this method but there is down side ( negative effect ) too. inbreeding is when we mate two closely related chooks ,like son over mother , father over daughters . two full sibling . a good thing about this method we can establish the traits we want very quick but in doing so we reinforce the bad traits too and we run into inbreeding depression very quick ,
for this method to work without side effect ,we need to have sublime parent stock to start with , bird without any faults .only qualities . if this bird carry any sort of fault even if it is receissive one we will run into problems for sure .
line breeding is when we mate two birds both of them share a same potent ancestor in they pedigree in the first 1 to 5 generation back .
example is mating two half sibling ( both share a same sire or a same dam ) we say they are inbred to that ancestor they share back in a first generation
mating two cousins ,they share a same ancestor back in the second generation ( rooster A X hen B = cockerel AB . rooster A X hen C = pullet AC . if we mate Cockerel AB to pullet AC .we can say we are line breeding to rooster A .
if you guys need more explanation let me know .we can deep into this breeding method with a lot details .
this is just a simple explanation .

Thank you for this.
I have chicks hatching today from

Jr sire
Lovesong and Moonshine dames.

This would be an example of line breeding if we chose to do so.

1 progeny from lovesong
1 progeny from Moonshine
Bred together

But for now, our goal is to keep only cockerels from these parings.

yes that will be line breeding if we decide to go that way . Jr has many faults and we don t want to line breed him because we will be reinforcing those bad traits . but there is way to go around it if we want
if we want to line breed Jr and get ready if the bad traits he is carrying we have to keep sons and daughters from him .
here how we do it =
we keep the best son from him and LS and we mate him to inrelted hen = we keep cockerel A
we keep the best pullet from him and LS and we mate here to different cockerel from Good gomb line = we keep pullet Aa
we keep a best son from him and moonshine and we mate him to a different hen = we keep a cockerel B.
we keep a best pullet from him and MS and we mate her to different cockerel from Good comb line = we keep pullet Bb
Second step =
we mate Cockerel A to pullet Bb = we keep cockerel ABb.
we mate cockerel B to a different inrelated hen C = we keep cockerel BC.
we mate pullet Aa to a different cockerel inrelated D = we keep pullet/s AaD
step 3 =
we mate cockerel BC to pullet/s AaD = we keep pullet/s BCAaD
step 4 final step =
we mate cockerel ABb ( from second step) to pullet/s BCAaD = we will get A2,B2 ab,CD this progeny will be line bred to Jr through 2 sons and 2 daughters with a better traits from line C and D .
I don t think it is worth the effort . to do this work we need some very sprcial bird because we will be spending 4 years of breding time .lot work .
too much Blah blah........................................

I'm glad you say this is a waste of time to do.

My head was going to explode figuring out pens for this. Haha

Jr has a lot of faults.
I do like the chicks he produces.
Nice hatch down, color and head spots. They are nice but as they grow, I am culling a lot.

I am eager to see how the trio paring does.

looking forward to see my self how they chicks will turn up .I m expecting some stunning chicks will be in there .
there is better and easier way to breed chooks ,we don t need to go crasy . some peoples like the complicated stuff .
hope the trio will give us couple very nice and correct cockerels .
