International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

These pictures are anywhere from a week old to yesterday they are almost 10 weeks old now. I only have 2 pullets and 2 cockerels remaining. I re homed the other 4 birds because I simply didn’t have room to house them all.

The black pullet you named Betty, correct? She's beautiful. Did you by chance have a pic of their egg color they hatched from?

Yes that is Betty. The best picture I have of the eggs I set is a picture from when they hatched. The darkest eggs in the incubator are marans, there are also light brahama, RIR, and marans over Easter Egger eggs in there.

I specifically asked for different colors because at the time I wanted a colorful basket. The attached picture of egg carton is from his Craigslist add. If you want the darkest possible I’m sure he would accommodate the request. This guy has shelves full of eggs that didn’t fit into his table full of incubators.

Ohhh....nice looking eggs.

Question... My original birds are 3ish yrs old. Kong has a mix flock, King and his 6 all BCM's. How do I go about test mating the hens with Kong?
Will they reject him being with King since all were chicks?
I know separate breeder pens I need yet.
How would you approach this scenario?
The hens don t care much if you swap the rooster. If you know the eggs of each hen than just move king with the new hens and mark the eggs so you will know when the chicks hatch who is they dam s . Chooks man

Thank you, my friend. I'm going to expand coops, and add breeder pens. Flip flop the boys and go from there.
The most important part of your advise I got was leg band them hens and mark the eggs. I must know what dam the chicks are coming from or it's all guesswork and headaches.
I know which eggs are my original 3.
Joannie is my darkest perfect shape egg. (Maybe a hard 5-6?)
Jett is a tad lighter and oblong (good 5?)
and Betty lays the dull sheen dark egg (5/6?)
Now the other 3 is where I lose it. I believe 1 is laying a darker and the other 2 are super light. End of cycle/molting going on at present so I'm waiting for the paint booth to fire back up but I'm gonna say at minimum the 2 are culls.

That sound great you know your hens eggs . Will help a lot in the future chicks selection . If they show a lot faults it s easier to pull they dam out of the breeding pen. Good luck
Chooks nan

Just thought I’d make a post celebrating my year anniversary of having my Marans, they hatched a year ago yesterday. Four BCMs, a BlCM and three cross breed chicks hatched, I had them in my bedroom for three weeks because the shed got too cold. One cockerel mysteriously disappeared the day we moved them to the allotment, and then later a pullet died from gapeworm, leaving me with a trio of pure marans and a trio of crosses. I’ll just post a few pictures of Loki, Natasha, (BCM roo and hen) Chanel (BlCM), Wanda, Potato (SD Welsummer x Warrens) and Freddy (barnyward mix roo) growing up.

P.S, sorry I said a few and attached 40! And @wrathsfarm , feel free to make a comeback joke about Loki’s tail.

I thought I had it bad.... 😂
We're in this together, very pretty birds and eggs my friend.

Thanks 😂
I want to transplant his tail onto a Welsummer. We both have two lovely looking birds ruined by their tails, it’s a shame but at least they both have a lot going for them in front of them.
My Granddad doesn’t understand the breed standards and always mentions how nice he thinks his tail looks, I’ll let him think that.
